Wilbur C. Stoen, age 90, of Decorah, Iowa, died Thursday evening, January 26, 2017 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with the Rev. Kurt Bockoven officiating. Inurnment will be in Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. Friday, February 10 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, and on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m., one hour before the service, at Big Canoe Lutheran Church. Wilbur Carsten Stoen was born on April 22, 1926 in Spring Grove, Minnesota, the son of Knut and Mildred (Leikvold) Stoen. He was baptized and confirmed at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, Iowa. Wilbur graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1944. Wilbur was united in marriage to Eunice C. Hexom on August 29, 1948 at Big Canoe Lutheran Church. The wedding ceremony was performed by her father, Rev. William Hexom. This union was blessed with two children, Barbara and William. Wilbur was a dairy farmer for many years. He was very active at Big Canoe Lutheran Church, including having served as Church President, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of 4-Square Cooperative in Spring Grove, MN, was very active in and served as a Winneshiek County Soil Conservation Commissioner for many years, was President of Sons of Norway, active in the Torsk Club, the Highlandville Literary Society, the Luren Singers, and the Elks Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Knut and Mildred Stoen; two sisters, Betty (Norman) Thies and Norma (Max) Shaffer; and one brother, Eugene Stoen. Wilbur is survived by his wife Eunice; his daughter Barbara (Don) Dowd of Cedar Falls, Iowa; his son William Stoen of Decorah; three granddaughters and five great-granddaughters: Shannon (Dayle) Jones, Olivia and Emma, of Littleton, CO, Melissa (Paul) Boeke, Charlotte and Georgia, of Madison, WI, and Molly (Neil) Mulholland, and Norah, of The Netherlands; and by two sisters-in-law, Caryl Stoen of Ridgeway IA and Darlene Stoen of Decorah, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Winneshiek County Soil and Water Conservation District, 2296 Oil Well Road, Decorah IA 52101.
