Virgil J. Thuente, Sr., age 89, of Festina, IA. died Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, IA, with Msgr. Cletus Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday and also after 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, at the Festina Parish Center in Festina, IA. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m., on Monday at the Parish Center. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Virgil is survived by his wife: Irma Thuente, of over 67 years of marriage, in Festina, IA. Six children: Norma (Gary) Eckhardt, West Union, IA; Merle (Donna) Thuente, Calmar, IA; Vern (Sandy) Thuente, Decorah, IA; Doralee Thuente, New Hope, MN; Virgil (Joanne) Thuente, Jr., Decorah, IA; John (Sharon) Thuente, Fort Atkinson, IA. Eleven grandchildren: Paula Prescott, Terry Goza, Tamara (Dave) Melde, Vicki (Tony) Daugherty, Wade (Jennifer) Thuente, Tim (Kris) Thuente, Tyler Thuente, Emily (Curt) Neuenkirk, Eric (Amy) Thuente, Nicole (Lloyd) Kuennen and Marcus Thuente. Twelve great grandchildren: Colton & Landon, Goza, Joshua & Justin Melde, Evan & Blake Daugherty, Hannah Thuente, Lindsey, Hailey & Gavin Thuente, Evan Thuente and Aiden Kuennen. Four sisters: Lucille Holthaus, Ossian, IA; Anita (Alphonse) Tieskoetter, Ossian, IA; Kathleen (Jim) Nelson, Marion, IA; and Rose Ann Gussy, Roselle, IL. Four brothers: Joseph (Arlene) Thuente, Ackley, IA; Ludger (Lynn) Thuente, Sterling, IL; Sylvan (Connie) Thuente, Macon, GA; and Marlin (Pat) Thuente, Scottsdale, AZ. One brother-in-law: Delbert Winter, Waucoma, IA. Three sisters-in-law: Leona Bullerman, Calmar, IA; Alma Ameling, St. Lucas, IA; and Mary Lou Winter, Lawler, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph & Edwina Thuente. One daughter: Beverly Thuente on June 4, 2006 and one granddaughter: Karla Thuente on February 15, 1990. One brother: Lambert Thuente. Two sisters: Arlene Thuente and Marie Thuente. His father and mother-in-law: John & Minnie Winter. Four brothers-in-law: Cletus Holthaus, Vincent Bullerman, Melvin Winter and Irvin Ameling. Two sisters-in-law: Ruby Winter and Lou Thuente.
