Viola E. Hertges

Viola E. Hertges, age 85, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a lingering illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2006, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and until 10:30 a.m. Friday morning the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday. Viola’s survivors include her husband, Leonard Hertges, Decorah, IA; daughter: Cheryl (Jim) Elshoff, Florence, AL; son: Jim Hertges, Spillville, IA; daughter-in-law: Judy Hertges, Ossian, IA. Sister: Luella (Mrs. Rolf) Dale, Decorah, IA. Nine grandchildren: Angela (Don) Ellis, Castalia, IA; Gina Imoehl, Ossian, IA; Jennifer Baumgartner, West Union, IA; Julie (Andy) Plozel, Monona, IA; Kristie (Dean) Baumler, Ossian, IA; Amanda Schmitt, Des Moines, IA; Ron Hertges, Festina, IA; Brad (Karen) Hertges, Ossian, IA and Ben Elshoff, Florence, AL; and seventeen great-grandchildren. Two sisters-in-law: Gladys (Mrs. Walter) Wepler, Decorah, IA and Pat (Mrs. Percy) Wepler, Waterloo, IA. And many nieces and nephews. Viola was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter: Ann Marie Schmitt on March 19, 2004; a son: Richard Hertges on December 3, 2004; three grandsons: Troy Hertges in 1995; Joseph Schmitt in 1966 and Matthew Elshoff in 1984. Two sisters: Gail (Rudy) Ode and Dorothy (Carlton) Anderson. Three brothers: Percy, Jesse and Walter Wepler. The family gratefully acknowledges the support and care of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Waukon and the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
