Veronica Egli

March 29, 1935 — July 8, 2024

Veronica Marie (Lakers) Baxter Egli passed peacefully on July 8, 2024, at the age of 89, into her heavenly home. Her family and friends will miss her dearly but are comforted that she is with the Lord. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly is assisting the family. 319-352-1187 Veronica was born March 29, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa to Wilfred and Mary (Castle) Lakers. She grew up in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated from Heelan Catholic High School in 1952. On September 5, 1953, she married Bruce Edward Baxter at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. To this union four children were born: Denise, Cindy, Kathy, and Laurie. Their family lived in many places, San Diego, CA, Minot, ND, Ames, Primghar, and Waukon. Veronica worked as a telephone operator in Ames and as a bookkeeper and accountant for the Waukon newspaper, but her biggest joy was being a wonderful mom! She always welcomed friends, was an exceptional cook, and taught her children lifelong values. Reading books, praying on our knees each night before bed, and having fun together were part of her everyday life. Bruce and Veronica later divorced. On November 27, 1982, she was united in marriage to Joseph Roger Egli. They loved each other deeply and enjoyed playing golf, spending time with family, going for daily walks, and being snowbirds to Florida every winter. Veronica loved and appreciated her stepsons Steve and Brian along with their families. Joe treated Veronica like a queen, and they were married for 23 years until Joe passed away on February 4, 2006. Veronica was a lifelong volunteer. She volunteered with Girl Scouts, driving cheer squads to games, the Waverly Health Center, Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, her church and especially enjoyed the people she met at the Waverly Chamber of Commerce. She was recognized as an honorary recipient of the Governors Volunteer Award for her service to the Waverly Chamber. She loved to read, crocheting afghans for her family, and playing bridge. She made the best chocolate chip cookies, birthday cake with golden frosting, and very refreshing desserts! Most importantly, she loved spending time with her daughters, stepsons, extended family and friends. She would never be shy in asking a stranger if they were someone she knew. Veronica is survived by her daughters: Denise (Steve) Duffy, Cindy (Greg) Anderson, Kathy (Joe) Schwartzhoff, and Laurie (Sam) Parizek; her stepsons: Steve (Pam) Egli and Brian Egli (Jamie Mulholland), twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Joe Egli; her parents Wilfred and Mary Lakers; her brother, Gale Lakers; and her ex-husband, Bruce Baxter. The family would like to thank the staff at Wellington Place and Winn Med Hospice for their wonderful care for Veronica and their loving support for our family. Veronica's bright smile and friendly heart will be missed! A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service at the church. The service will be livestreamed on the Redeemer Lutheran Church Facebook page. Burial of Cremains will be held in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Memorials may be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Alzheimer’s Association, or to the Winneshiek County Celebration of Life.
