Valerian "Vally" Kuboushek

Valerian “Valley” Kuboushek, age 71, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at his home following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at the Springfield Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Norman Bauer presiding. Burial will be in the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery, Calmar, Iowa. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday morning. Valerian Charles “Vally” Kuboushek was born on April 6, 1938, the son of Charles and Evelyn (Humpal) Kuboushek near Spillville, Iowa. Vally was baptized April 24, 1938, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville and was confirmed June 1, 1952, at Calmar Lutheran Church. He graduated from Calmar Public Schools in May 1957, and worked a few years for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He attended General Motors Service Training in Minneapolis to become a mechanic. He returned to Calmar and worked at Egge Chevrolet, Pilgram Chevrolet and at Hilsabeck Chevrolet. While working at these garages, he started driving school bus for the South Winn School District from Nov. 1961-1971 and was a sub bus driver from the fall of 1991 to March 2003. In March 1983, he started as a mechanic and worked until June 2003 and then went back to driving from July 2003 to August 2009. He trained several bus mechanics after his retirement and was always willing to help South Winn at any time. Vally loved the students on his routes, driving students to their athletic events and especially the girls’ state basketball tournaments. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle with Bernie Neuzil and he loved his cats and all animals. He was a very kind and giving man. Vally was a member of the Calmar Lutheran Church. Vally is survived by several cousins and many friends. Vally was preceded in death by his father: Charles Kuboushek in 1965 and his mother: Evelyn Kuboushek in1992.
