Theodore "Ted" Schmitt

Ted Schmitt, age 85, of Fort Atkinson, IA, died on Sunday, November 14, 2010, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 20, 2010, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, IA, with Rev. Nick March presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday and until 10:00 a.m., on Saturday morning at the Schluter - Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Theodore “Ted” Christopher Schmitt was born on May 12, 1925, the son of Christopher and Agnes (Blong) Schmitt in St. Lucas, IA. Ted attended St. Luke’s Catholic School and farmed with his family until 1947. He married Marcella Kuboushek on September 23, 1947, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA. Together they farmed west of Fort Atkinson, until Ted entered the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in 2005. While farming, Ted sold Dekalb Seed corn for over twenty-five years. He enjoyed farming, his dairy cows and talking to local farmers and friends in town, along with keeping his farm and yard neat and clean. Ted served as trustee for Washington Township for many years, worked at the voting booths at election time. He also was an avid Giants fan. Ted was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and served as a Parish Council member. Ted is survived by his three children: Harvey (Pam) Schmitt, Raleigh, NC; Joyce (Keith) Wilges, Grimes, IA and Karen (Patrick) Minger, Chanhassen, MN. Six grandchildren: Sarah Schmitt, Raleigh, NC; Katie (Josh) Lewis, Navarre, FL; Keri (Ryan) Moore, Denver, CO; Maggie Jennisch, Fort Collins, CO; Luke Minger, Victoria, MN and Ben Minger, Provo, UT. Three great grandchildren: Ari Lewis and Taylor & Sydney Moore. Two sisters: Gladys (Joe) Oppold, Waterloo, IA, and Sylvia (George) Barloon, Fort Atkinson, IA. One brother: Earl Schmitt, Johnston, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Laura Kuboushek, Calmar, IA, and Christina (Herb) Rausch, Fort Atkinson, IA. Ted was preceded in death by his wife: Marcella (Kuboushek) Schmitt in October 17, 1997. His parents: Christopher and Agnes Schmitt. Three brothers: Linus (Veronica) Schmitt, Richard (Charlene) Schmitt and Father Donald Schmitt. Brothers & sisters-in-law: Raymond & Delores Kuboushek, Wilma & Rudy Gerleman, Mildred & Ed Silhacek, Viola & Frank Meyer, Robert Kuboushek, and Nell Schmitt.
