Thelma Schroeder

Thelma Schroeder, age 100, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Monday, January 9, 2012, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 13, 2012, at the Calmar Lutheran Church with Rev. Patricia Shaw presiding. Burial will be in the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery, Calmar, IA. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Thursday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, 202 South Washington Street, Calmar, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday morning. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Aase Haugen Nursing Home, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, IA 52101 or to the Calmar Lutheran Church, 201 North East Street, Calmar, IA 52132. Thelma Olava (Mosby) Schroeder was born on August 3, 1911, the daughter of Andrew and Johannah (Bergerson) Mosby in Eldorado, IA. Thelma graduated from Ossian High School in 1929. She was united in marriage to Elliott Schroeder on January 13, 1934 in Decorah, Iowa. They moved to Postville, where Thelma was a homemaker and raised her children. She also worked as a waitress at the Blue Arrow, Rima’s Café and Grubb’s Café, along with working at Harold Schroeder’s Grocery Store and for the State Liquor Store. They moved to Sumner and she worked at the Pickering Grocery Store and in 1977, moved to Calmar, where they retired. Thelma and Elliott both enjoyed going to their trailer at Harpers Ferry where they loved to fish for crappies. Thelma enjoyed gardening and her flower beds. She was an active member of the Calmar Senior Citizens and the Calmar Lutheran Church. Thelma is survived by her daughter: Patricia Cayton, Vinton, IA. One son: Robert (Olga) Schroeder, Scottsdale, AZ. Nine grandchildren: Mark (Tracy) Cayton, Denise (Tom) Mettner, Kevin (Betty) Cayton, Diana Cayton, James (Kris) Cayton, Tracy (Scott) Lange, Jay (Heidi) Schroeder, Randy (Kathleen) Schroeder, and Sandra (Clinton) Starr, along with twenty-six great grandchildren and thirty-one great great grandchildren. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents: Andrew and Johannah Mosby. Her husband: Elliott in March 1994. Her son-in-law: Richard Cayton in March 2001. One grand-daughter-in-law: Jacquelyn Cayton in January 2007. Two brothers: Elmer and William Mosby.
