Teri
Gaustad
August 11, 1960 – May 14, 2026
It is with profound sadness and deep love that we announce the passing of Teri Gaustad, a woman whose warmth, kindness, and radiant spirit touched countless lives. Teri passed away surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy defined by selflessness, laughter, and unwavering love for those around her.
A Celebration of Life in Brownsville, MN, in June to follow, time and date pending.
In Lieu of flowers, Teri requested memorials to go to her grandchildren. Please send them to Helms Funeral Home at 306 E. Water Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
Born with a vibrant personality and compassionate heart, Teri grew up in La Crescent, MN, where she graduated from La Crescent High School in 1978. In school, she was known for her energy and enthusiasm as a gymnast, softball player, and cheerleader, embracing every opportunity with determination and joy. She continued her education at Western Wisconsin Technical College, earning her associate degree and setting the foundation for a life filled with hard work and dedication.
On January 16, 1982, Teri married Brian LaRue. Together they brought three wonderful children into the world over the course of 22 years. Though their marriage later ended, the family they built together remained one of Teri’s proudest accomplishments and greatest joys.
Teri spent many years working in retail at Luther College, where she became beloved for her clever marketing ideas, infectious personality, and genuine love for the students she encountered each day. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, valued, and welcomed wherever she went.
She found happiness in life’s simple but beautiful moments — attending music and sporting events, soaking in the warmth of the beach, and never missing an opportunity to admire a breathtaking sunset. Yet one of the most meaningful chapters of her life began in the summer of 2011, when she moved to Brownsville, MN and discovered her true calling bartending at Lawrence Lake Marina. For 15 unforgettable summers, Teri became the heart and soul of the marina, bringing smiles, laughter, sunshine, and friendship to everyone lucky enough to pull up a chair beside her. To know Teri there was to feel instantly at home.
Eventually, Teri began splitting her time in Florida, where she purchased her winter home and embraced the endless summer lifestyle that suited her perfectly. Whether under the Minnesota summer sun or along the Florida coast, she carried the same lighthearted spirit and magnetic energy everywhere she went.
Teri carried a deep spiritual foundation throughout her life that shaped the way she loved and cared for others. Her relationship with God brought her strength, peace, and perspective, especially during life’s most difficult moments. She believed wholeheartedly in leading with compassion, extending grace freely, and finding beauty in the everyday blessings around her.
Above all else, Teri’s greatest joy and proudest role in life was being a mother and Nana. Her three children, four grandchildren, and the many friends who were always welcomed into her home were the center of her world. Her home was more than a place — it was a refuge filled with love, laughter, support, and open arms. She loved fiercely, gave endlessly, and never hesitated to put others before herself.
Teri was truly one of the most selfless people to walk this earth from the day she entered it until her final moments. Her kindness, generosity, and beautiful spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
Though she will be deeply missed, Teri’s sunshine will never fade. Her laughter will echo in beach sunsets, riverside summers, family gatherings, and every moment shared with those she loved most.
Teri is survived by her children Jenny LaRue, Kimi (LaRue) Steiber (Ross), and Brett LaRue (Anne Hager); her grandchildren Landon, Grace, Brantley, and Maverick; and her two brothers Brent Gaustad (Virginia), Doug Gaustad (Connie) and her step-father Dave Ohl.
Teri was preceded in death by her parents, Barbara Ohl and Kenneth Gaustud, as well as her step mother Janice Gaustad.
