Susan Keune, age 75, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Friday, December 26, 2025, at Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, surrounded by family.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at St. Luke Catholic Church, St. Lucas, Iowa, with Rev. Daniel Knipper presiding. Burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the church on Monday, January 5, 2026. Rosary will be held at 3:30 p.m. before the visitation at the church. There will be no visitation before the service on Tuesday.
Susan Caroline Kuennen was born to Clarence and Geneva (Huinker) Kuennen of St. Lucas, Iowa. She attended St. Luke’s High School until her junior year, when it closed, then graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1968. After high school, she moved to Cedar Rapids and began working at Square D where she worked for over 40 years. On May 29, 1971, Susan was united in marriage to Gary Keune at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas. They later made their home in Marion, IA, where they became members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Sue and Gary also started Sugarland Rentals in Marion and later opened a second location in Branson, MO. Together they had four children: Chad, Chalise, Adam, and Andrew. Sue loved spending time at the family cabin in Frederika, stargazing on late-night pontoon rides. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and she enjoyed going to their sporting events and school activities as well as their annual trip to Adventureland. She treasured time spent with her siblings, especially sister weekends and trips together with the Ya-Yas. She was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and enjoyed spending fall Saturdays tailgating and cheering on the Hawks. In her later years, she also loved taking special trips to visit her son Andy and her grandchildren in Hawaii.
Sue is survived by her Children: Chad (Leslie) Keune, Coralville, IA; Chalise Keune, Marion, IA; Adam (Maggie) Keune, Iowa City, IA; and Andrew Keune, Honolulu, HI. Grandchildren: Ella Keune, Jackson, Maegan, Abigail, and Emersen Reininga; Alannah and Audriana Keune. Siblings: Jean Kuennen of Rochester, MN; Karen (Don) Guidice of Chugwater, WY, Clarice (Harvey) Timp of Calmar, IA, Sandy (Joe) Timp of Castalia, IA, Cindy (Norm) Einck of West Union, IA, Lisa (Al) Brockmeyer of Calmar, IA, Dale Kuennen of Calmar, IA, Jackie (Lance) Brandt of West Des Moines, IA, Loren (JoAnn) Kuennen of Ossian, IA, Mark (Linda) Kuennen of Ft. Atkinson, IA and Jeff (Kristin) Kuennen of Marion, IA. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Jackie Kuennen of Ft. Atkinson, IA; Mike (Bonnie) Keune, Little Turkey, IA; Holly Keune, Little Rock, AR, Kenneth “Buck” (Susan) Keune, Decorah, IA; and Penny (Jamie) Johnson, Sumner, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Keune. Parents: Clarence and Geneva (Huinker) Kuennen. Father and mother-in-law: Kenneth and Ruth Pauline (Anderson) Keune. Brother Randy Kuennen. Brother-in-law Alan Keune. Nephew: Mark Keune. Niece: Kelly Guidice. Adopted grandparents: Paul and Mae Huggins.
