July 28, 1923 — March 4, 2005

Sidney Hilberg, age 81, of Decorah, Iowa died on Friday, March 4, 2005 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa following a brief illness. Memorial may be given to the Decorah Lutheran Church or the Aase Haugen Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 7, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. James Glesne, Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vick officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa with full military rites at the graveside. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday morning. There will be a VFW Memorial service at the funeral home at 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening. Sidney Arnold Hilberg was born on July 28, 1923 the son of Ingmar and Clara ( ) Hilberg in rural Decorah, Iowa. Sidney was baptized and confirmed at the Decorah Lutheran Church. He attended Decorah schools and helped on the family farm. He enlisted in the US Army during World War II, serving in France and Germany and the Battle of the Bulge. Sidney married Leona Guttormson on October 10, 1946 at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Sidney worked for the Milwaukee Railroad, where he was an Agent/Operator around Chicago and other place until he retired after twenty-years. Sidney and Leona retired to Decorah and he enjoyed watching sports and was an avid Cubs fan. Sidney was a member of the Helof-Holm VFW Chapter #1977, the Milwaukee Railroad Employees Union and the Decorah Lutheran Church. Sidney’s survivors include his wife, Leona Hilberg, Decorah, IA; One son: Steve Hilberg & wife Lori, Temecula, CA. Six grandchildren: Lindsay and Ryan of Crystal Lake, IL; Michelle (Terry) Swearingen, Wiersdale, FL; Ericka (Micah) Durham, Boise, ID; Katrina and Daniel, Temecula, CA. Two sisters: Olga Otteson, Decorah, IA and Charlotte Wheatman, Phoenix, AZ. Four sisters-in-law: Norma Hilberg, Decorah, IA; Grace Spilde, Decorah, IA; Alice Larson, Cedar Rapids, IA and Helen Kuntz, Minneapolis, MN and several nieces and nephews. Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, Ingmar and Clara Hilberg; one son: Sidney Hilberg, Jr. in 1986 and two brothers: Carl and Walter.
