Sherman B. Oyen

Sherman B. Oyen, age 90, of Decorah, Iowa, died Sunday, August 21, 2005 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah by Rev. James Glesne, with burial in Pontoppidan Cemetery in rural Decorah. Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at the funeral home where there will be an IOOF Lodge Memorial Service at 6:30 P.M. Friends may also call from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Sherman B. Oyen was born November 19, 1914 in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the son of Gunder and Nellie (Giving) Oyen. He was baptized and confirmed at Pontoppidan Norwegian Lutheran Church in rural Decorah and educated in the country schools in Glenwood Township. Sherman farmed north of Locust for more than fifty years. He retired in the late 1980’s and moved to Decorah. In 1954, Sherman and his brother, Burton were recognized as Iowa State Corn Yield Champions. He was very proud of that accomplishment. Sherman was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church and the IOOF Lodge in Decorah and a former member of the Sons of Norway lodge. His passion in life was farming, but Sherman also enjoyed traveling to Norway to visit relatives. He had a great sense of humor and was well informed, spending much time studying and reading at the Decorah public library. Sherman became a resident of Aase Haugen home in Decorah on July 1, 2003. Survivors include a sister, Corrine Thingvold of Decorah, IA; a niece, Linda Schwade of Stewartville, MN; five nephews, Duane (Denay) Oyen of Eau Claire, WI, Alcurtis (Betty) Borsheim of LaCrosse, WI, Gerald (May) Borsheim of Cedar Falls, IA, Kenneth (Carol) Borsheim of Appleton, WI, and Donovan Borsheim of LaCrosse, WI; several great nieces and nephews. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Burton and his wife Rose Oyen, Emmett Oyen; two sisters, Ideline Oyen and Jeanette and her husband Alva Borsheim.
