Robert "Bob" Hunt

        Robert “Bob” Hunt, age 95, of Decorah, IA, died on Thursday, July 31, 2014, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.      A visitation will be held from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA.      Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, IA.      Robert Russell “Bob” Hunt was born on April 7, 1919, the son of Russell Charles “RC” and Bessie (Taylor) Hunt in Mason City, IA. Bob graduated from Decorah High School in 1937. While in high school, Bob excelled in all athletic sports he participated in. He attended Coe College for one year and then entered the US Navy, serving in World War II. He had a remarkable Navy career, on board the USS Tambor, SS198, where he served in 12 consecutive combat war patrols. After the War, he returned to Waterloo and worked for Iowa Glass and Paint. He was united in marriage to Barbara Bishop on July 14, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. To this union, two sons were born: David and Craig. In 1950, they moved to Decorah and Bob bought out his father in Hunt’s Variety Store and Saving Center. In 1970, he sold the business and worked as the first director for the Decorah Park and Rec, until he retired in 1981. One of his greatest achievements was the establishment of the Pulpit Rock Campground. Throughout his lifetime, Bob enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, canoeing, playing tennis, running, bicycling and skiing, as well as being an instructor for years.      Bob is survived by his son, David Hunt, Tipton, IA. Daughter-in-law: Sue Macal, Decorah, IA. Sister-in-law: Peggy Sage Hunt, Madison, WI.      Bob was preceded in death by his parents: Russell Charles “RC” and Bessie (Taylor) Hunt. His wife: Barbara Hunt on March 4, 2008. His son: Craig Hunt on August 31, 2010. Brother: Dick Hunt. Sister: Marge (Bill) Bucher.
