Obert D. Sacquitne, age 85, of Decorah, IA, died Wednesday morning, December 26, 2012 at Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home in Decorah. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Decorah Lutheran Church with Pastor Bryan Robertson and Pastor Dave Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah in the spring of 2013. Full Military Honors will be by American Legion Club Post No. 299 of Mabel, Minnesota. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 P.M. Friday, December 28 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Saturday after 9:30 A.M. at the church, one hour before services. Obert Donald Sacquitne was born September 13, 1927 to Myer and Ida (Askelson) Sacquitne in Spring Grove, Minnesota. He attended school in the Decorah area and graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1946. He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 - 1948. Obert was united in marriage to Virginia M. Hovey on August 27, 1949 at Decorah Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with five children: Virlis, Donald, Karen, David and Marybeth. Obert and Virginia started farming west of Decorah in 1949. In 1953, they moved to a farm north of Decorah, near Burr Oak, where they farmed for several years. The whole family helped with the farm and dairy operation. Obert and Virginia retired in 1992 and moved to Decorah. He was a member of the Winneshiek County Soil and Water Conservation District for over 50 years, Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital Board, Farm Bureau, Elks, American Legion Post No. 299 of Mabel, Minnesota, Lutheran Cemetery Board and was very active at Decorah Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council, several committees, money counter and as an usher. Obert and Virginia enjoyed going to dances, playing cards, fishing, traveling and stock car racing. Later in life he enjoyed watching the grandchildren grow up and pursue their education goals. He has enjoyed the great-grandchildren whom he loved to hold, especially the babies. He kept busy watching the crops grow, harvest time, his John Deere tractors, Virginia’s cooking, Norwegian treats and his McDonald’s coffee group. He will be missed. Obert complimented and appreciated all of the care given to him by the staff of the Eastern Star Home and Dialysis Unit. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Virlis McClintock on April 4, 2002; a son, Orlando Donald Sacquitne on May 29, 2010; and four brothers: Raymond, Kenneth, Forrest “Bud”, and Stanley Sacquitne. Obert is survived by his wife Virginia of Decorah; two daughters: Karen (Larry) Steffens of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Marybeth (Lyle Jr.) Cary of Decorah; one son, David (Julie) Sacquitne of Decorah; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: and one brother, Lyle Sacquitne of Decorah. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Winneshiek County Soil and Water Conservation District or Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home in Decorah.
