Norbert Lechtenberg, age 82, of Festina, Iowa, died on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at his home following a long illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 24, 2009, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, in Festina, Iowa, with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Parish Center in Festina, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture wake service at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Parish Center in Festina. Norbert Bernard Lechtenberg was born on December 23, 1926, the son of John Bernard and Catherine (Brincks) Lechtenberg, on a farm south of Festina, Iowa. They moved to the family farm in 1932. Norbert attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina. Norbert served in the US Army from October 27, 1950 to October 26, 1952, in the military police. He was united in marriage on May 6, 1953, to Flavia Boyer at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. They lived together on a farm outside of Festina, Iowa, where they farmed and raised their eight children and spent time with their grandchildren. Norbert was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. Norbert’s survivors include his eight children: Michael Lechtenberg, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Gary Lechtenberg, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Margaret (Arlin) Pahl, Decorah, IA; Patricia (Gene) Frana, Decorah, IA; Barbara (Allan) Shatek, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Jane Lechtenberg, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Norbert Lechtenberg, Jr., of Fort Atkinson, IA and Mary (Bryan) Hoyme, Decorah, IA. Twelve grandchildren: Teressa (Brandon) Kadlec, Travis Frana, Valerie (Russell) Brincks, Sandra (Kyle) Fischer, Sharon Frana, Amy Frana, Amanda (David) Shindelar, Joseph Shatek, Luke Shatek, Sterling Shatek, Bryce Hoyme and Madison Hoyme. Also, Stacy (Rob) Engelhardt, Lexie and Marissa Engelhardt, and Brian (Jewell) Pahl and Hannah & Jorden Pahl. Two sisters: Angela Schilling, Wausau, WI, and Marie (Glen) Wilberding, Alta Vista, IA. One brother: Robert (Jovina) Lechtenberg, Lawler, IA. Five sisters-in-law: Evelyn Boyer, Calmar, IA; Connie Woodson, New Hampton, IA; Arlene Boyer, Dubuque, IA; Lucille Lechtenberg, Decorah, IA; and Gladys Lechtenberg, Cedar Falls, IA. One brother-in-law: Dennis Boyer, St. Lucas, IA, along with many nieces and nephews. Norbert was preceded in death by his parents: Bernard and Catherine (Brincks) Lechtenberg. His wife: Flavia Lechtenberg on October 16, 2008. Five brothers: Anthony, Johnny, Lawrence, Alfred and Edwin Lechtenberg. His father and mother-in-law: Adam and Margaret (Ott) Boyer. Five brothers-in-law: Leonard, Raymond, Larry, Andrew and Eugene Boyer. Two sisters-in-law: Sister Margaret Boyer, FSPA and Maxine Boyer.
