Norbert Kuennen, age 90, of St. Lucas, Iowa, died on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Hillcrest Home in Sumner, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa, with Rev. Nick Radloff presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the church. Everyone attending is required to wear a mask and practice social distancing. Norbert Henry Kuennen was born on January 2, 1930 the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Meyer) Kuennen at their home in St. Lucas, IA. He attended school at St. Luke’s Catholic School. He enlisted in the Army and served from 1951 until 1953 in Alaska. Norbert was united in marriage to Dolores Hageman on May 15, 1954 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, IA. Norbert and Dolores owned and operated Kuennen’s Tap in St. Lucas from 1956-2006. Other jobs he held were farming, milk route, and road construction. Norbert enjoyed playing cards, snowmobiling, gambling and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Knights of Columbus. Norbert is survived by his wife Dolores. Children: Janice (Sam) Schmitt, Waucoma, IA; Eileen (Steven) Valdez, Round Rock, TX; Cheryl (Pat) Carolan, Waucoma, IA; Norbert Jr., St. Lucas, IA; Lori (Matt) Herold, Ft. Atkinson, IA; and Sheila (Merle) Reicks, Waucoma, IA. Grandchildren: Sabrina Schmitt, Conrad Schmitt, Jennifer Valdez (Greg Jones), Maria (William) Warriner, Sonya (Alex) Dent, Monica (Joey) Boyer, Blake (Kelly) Carolan, Cole Carolan, Kyla Kuennen, Nathan Herold, Brooke Herold, McKenna (Jade) Walter, Travis, Kelby and Dylan Reicks. Great grandchildren: Whitney, Brittney, Gregory, Madison, Liam, Adalynn, Claire, Alaina, River and Arlo. Brothers: Neil; Henry (Arlene); Greg (Rosemary); and Martin. Sisters: Helen (Fred) Williams; Margaret (Gerald) Kuennen; Laura (Art) Matt; and Kathy (Dennis) Russler. Sisters-in-law: Darlene Kuennen and Elaine Kuennen, Lucille Kruse, Vera Kriener, Sr. Joan Hageman FSPA, Pat Hageman; and Cleon Hageman.Brothers-in-law: Jim Kuhn and Victor (Elaine) Hageman, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by their son: Wayne Kuennen in 1984. Parents: Frank and Elizabeth (Meyer) Kuennen. Brothers: David, Francis and Luke. Sister: Mary Ann (Jim) Kuhn. Mother and Father In-Law: Nick and Rosalia Hageman. Sisters-in-law: Irma (Neil) Kuennen; Carol (Martin) Kuennen; Florentina Hageman; and Rita Wenthold. Brothers-in-law: Bob Kuhn; Edwin Hageman; Ermin Hageman; Quentin Hageman; Ervin Wenthold; Greg Kriener; and John Kruse.
