Michelle “Shelly” Smith, age 26, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Friday, August 20, 2010, surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa, with Rev. Nick March presiding. Burial will be in St. Luke’s Catholic Cemetery. Friend may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and also after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Michelle “Shelly” Ann Smith was born on March 20, 1984, the daughter of Louis and Trudy (Schwade) Smith in Cresco, Iowa. Shelly attended St. Luke’s and St. John’s Elementary School and graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 2002. She then attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, graduating in 2006 with a degree in Business and Public Relations. She started working for In-State Livestock in Tama as an administrative assistant, while also taking classes at Carlson College for massage therapy. In March of 2008, Shelly was diagnosed with DSRCT (Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor) a very rare form of cancer. While in high school, Shelly played volleyball, basketball and softball. In 2002, she was chosen Miss St. Lucas. Shelly enjoyed playing softball, taking photos, watching movies, scrap booking, her five special nieces and nephews and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. Shelly loved being with her family and had organized for all of her siblings to be home this past weekend to play softball on a team for Czech Days. Her wish came true, as she became an Angel, to watch over her family as they played for her. Shelly is survived by her parents: Louis and Trudy Smith, Fort Atkinson, IA. Three sisters: Kelly & Adam Rudd, Cedar Rapids, IA; Lisa & Travis Guilliot, Phoenix, AZ; and Kristin & Josh Stanek, Milwaukee, WI. One brother: Brad Smith, Fort Atkinson, IA. Five nieces and nephews: Nathan, Brody & Hannah Rudd; Addison Stanek and Gavin Guilliot. Her maternal grandmother: Joan Schwade, Protivin, IA. Her paternal grandmother: Margaret Smith, Hickory, NC, formerly of St. Lucas, IA, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Shelly was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather: Eugene Schwade and paternal grandfather: Milton Smith. Two aunts: Norma Jean Bouska and Shelly’s godmother: Patricia Puffer Smith.
