Michael Gant

Michael Gant, age 78, of Oelwein, IA died on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at La Porte City Specialty Care in La Porte City, IA. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 20, 2022, at Helms Funeral Home - 604 South Ave, Decorah, IA 52101. Burial will be at a later date. Michael David Gant was born February 12, 1944, to Patrick and Beatrice (Roth) Gant in Wagner South Dakota. He was the oldest of seven children. He grew up on the Gant Polled Hereford Ranch in Geddes, South Dakota. Mike graduated from Geddes High School in 1962 and attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, majoring in Animal Sciences and Ag Business. He married Mary Lou Voteberg on February 24, 1968, in Platte South Dakota. They had four children Michelle (Jed) Dolley, Leanne (Dave) Foster, Shawn Gant and Corey (Tasha) Gant. They later divorced. Mike married Heike in 2000. They also later divorced. Mike was a well-known cattle buyer in the Northeast Iowa area for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, outdoor activities, singing, playing guitar and cooking. He is survived by Mary Lou Gant, children Michelle "Shelly" (Jed) Dolley, Corey, (Tasha and daughter Paisley) Gant, siblings Nancy Gant, Mark (Sandy) Gant, Patrice (Bill) Mushitz, Dennis (Gloria) Gant, Sheila (Randy) Boyd and their families, grandchildren Makinzie (Ben) Dugger and Parker Monroe, Dalton Headington, and Amber Foster. He was preceded in death by his parents Pat and Boots Gant, children Leanne and Shawn, and sister Maureen Johnson.
