Melvin Hageman

     Melvin Hageman, age 86, of Fort Atkinson, IA, died on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, IA.      Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 16, 2014, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 304 South Maryville, Calmar, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.      Friends may call from 2:00-6:00 pm, on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, 202 South Washington Street, Calmar, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Monday morning.      In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Melvin Hageman Memorial Fund.      Melvin Felix Hageman was born on August 22, 1927, to Felix and Monica (Holthaus) Hageman on a farm in rural Calmar. He went to St. Al’s Catholic School in Calmar and farmed his childhood farm his entire life. He married Helen Heying on September 29, 1953 in Festina. He was a life-long member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.   Melvin enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and for the last fifteen years has had his assigned seat in the South Winneshiek Warrior baseball dugout. He loved baseball, Sunday dinners, playing cards, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and most of all, his family.      Melvin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen; seven children, Daniel (Laurie Kimber) Hageman, Waucoma, Sheryl (Perry) Sievert, Calmar; Timothy (Lori) Hageman, Ossian; Patrick (Gretchen) Hageman, Marshalltown; Joseph (Cheryl) Hageman, Calmar; Sue (Darin) Einwalter, Fort Atkinson; Sally (Mark) Schwartzhoff, Fort Atkinson, one daughter-in-law, Sandy Hageman, Calmar; twenty-three grandchildren; Cassandra (Corey) Tieskoetter, Ali and Tanner Hageman; Hailey (Matt Nickell) Hageman; Bryan (Jamie) Sievert, Kyle (Jessy Tuttle) Sievert, Tyler (Jocelyn Sanchez) Sievert; Courtney (Steve Huinker) Hageman, Nolan and Colton Hageman; Reese, Bennett and Luke Hageman; Ryan, Abby and Logan Hageman; Toril, Josie, William and Addyson Einwalter and Monica, Rodney and Emmett Schwartzhoff; and great grandchildren, Caleb, Carter, Chloe, Aaleyah, and baby Tieskoetter due in July. He is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law: Margaret Hageman, Calmar, IA; Pat Heying, Ossian, IA; Dennis and Marion Heying, Hawkeye, IA; Ernie and Kay Heying, Calmar, IA; John and Louise Heying, Calmar, IA; Doris Bouska, Hawkeye, IA; Carl and Carol Heying, Epworth, IA; Lorna and Cletus Bouska, Waucoma, IA; Robert and Tina Zoppel Heying, Napa, CA; Mary Ann and Dick Trewin, Waucoma, IA, and Sue Heying, Calmar, IA, nephew Paul Schmitz, Mabel, MN, and many other nephews, nieces and friends and one special Norwegian foreign exchange student, Toril Stanton, England.      Those preceding him in death are his son, Rodney on October 6, 1997, his parents, Felix and Monica Hageman, his father and mother-in-law, Joe and Rose Heying, brothers Julius and Irene Hageman, Carl Hageman, Richard and Clara Mae Hageman, Gust Hageman, one sister, Irene and Edmund Schmitz, brothers and sisters-in-law, Greg and Helen Heying, Paul Heying, Jim and Betty Bruess, and Jim Bouska, nephews Charles Hageman, Jerry and Jeff Schmitz, and Jim Bruess and one niece, Kristie Bouska Foreman.
