Mary Phillips (Mrs. Arthur Phillips) age 79, of rural Calmar, Iowa, died Monday, September 3, 2007, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa, after a long illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa, by Rev. Donald Hawes, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3:00 – 8:00 at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville with a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 6:00 there will also be visitation at the church after 10:00 on Wednesday. Mary Lillian Phillips (Novak) was born on August 27, 1928, to Edward and Ludmilla (Neuzil) Novak on the family farm near Lourdes, Iowa. She attended Howard County country school. Mary married Arthur Phillips on November 15, 1951, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Lourdes, Iowa. They farmed near Conover, Iowa, until Arthur’s death in 1978. Mary continued to live on the farm until December of 2006, when she moved to the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. She enjoyed gardening, mowing the lawn, cleaning the house, playing cards, watching TV, and visiting with friends. She especially enjoyed her family and grandchildren. Mary was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Mary is survived by one son: David Phillips, of Calmar, IA. One daughter: Linda (Jim) Hrdlicka, of Lawler, IA; Five grandchildren: Tim (Kristie) Hrdlicka; Dawn (Ryan) Shackleton; Kristy (Troy) Johnson; Laurie and Heather Hrdlicka. One great-grandchild Ashlee Hrdlicka. Two brothers: Edward (Agnes) Novak of Elma, IA; Tony Novak of Charles City, IA; and sister Mildred (Al) Hrdlicka of Elma, IA. One sister-in-law Evelyn (Delmar) Schmitt of Protivin, IA. Mary is preceded in death by her husband: Arthur (October 12, 1978); her parents: Edward and Ludmilla Novak; sister-in-law: Gladys Novak.
