Marvin Vick

April 3, 1925 — September 26, 2008

Marvin Vick, age 83, of Decorah, Iowa, died Friday, September 26, 2008, at his home after a sudden illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and on Wednesday morning until 10:00 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a VFW Memorial Service at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Marvin Orlando Vick was born on April 3, 1925, the son of Oscar and Emma Alida (Hovey) Vick at home on the farm west of Decorah, Iowa. Marvin attended Madison Township #7 country school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1943. Marvin entered the US Navy and served on the Destroyer Escort Levy DE 162, during World War II. Marv married Colletta Jeanne Cole on March 30, 1944 in Decorah, Iowa. Marv returned following the war to Decorah, where he farmed west of Decorah for many years. Marv enjoyed growing potatoes, gardening, fishing and reading western novels. He loved to tell jokes to anyone who would listen, had a good sense of humor and enjoyed ‘selling Ole Post Holes”. Marv was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, the Helof Holm VFW Post and the Sons of Norway. Marvin’s survivors include his wife: Colletta Vick, Decorah, IA. Three daughters: Marilyn (Ronald) Bonjean, Shorewood, WI; Nancy Vick, Edmunton, Alberta, Canada; LuAnn (Dan) McKenzie, Hokah, MN. Two grandchildren. Two grandsons: Ronald (Sara) Bonjean, Alexandria, VA and Jonathan (Sarah) McKenzie, LaCrosse, WI. One brother: Gordon (Gloria) Vick, Lewiston, MN, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents: Oscar and Emma Alida Vick. Two grandsons: Nathanael Bonjean and Daniel McKenzie. Father and mother-in-law: Carl and Rose Cole.
