Marvin "Mort" Martin

Marvin “Mort” Martin, age 87 of Decorah, died on Monday, July 1, 2019, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah surrounded by his family. A celebration of life will be held from 1:00 – 5:00pm on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at Phelps Park, Pavilion 4 in Decorah. In case of inclement weather, the celebration of life will be held at Pinters on hwy 9 west of Decorah.  Marvin David (Mort) Martin born June 11, 1932 in Decatur Co Iowa to David Martin and Francis Martin. Marvin grew up on a farm until he graduated in 1951 in Leon, Ia. He met his wife Virginia Bucy while in school and they married March 26th, 1954. Marvin worked on road construction and was a foreman for the Fred Carlson Co for 48 years until he retired in 1997. He was well known as “Mort” to his coworkers. Together Marvin and Virginia had 4 children: Michael David, Cynthia Ann, Kelley Scott and Tracey Lynn. The family traveled around with Marvin while he was doing construction until they settled in Decorah, IA in 1967. They bought a house and enjoyed northeast Iowa since then. Once retired, Marvin really enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and gardening. Marvin cut and delivered firewood for many people in the area. He also loved spending time with family listening and dancing to country music. He was a NASCAR motorsports fan as well and had 2 grandsons that race locally. Marvin was an avid story teller and loved to tell them to whomever would listen. Marvin is survived by his wife Virginia of Decorah and their 4 children: Michael (Mari) Martin, Castalia, IA, Cynthia (Mark) Ballard, Decorah, IA, Kelley (Tina) Martin, Calmar, IA and Tracey (Mark) Martin-Stumme Decorah, IA. Brother: Elvin (Judy) Martin Shreveport, LA. Grandchildren: Kari (Jason) Lee, Erie, PA, Shawn (Phil) Headington Decorah, IA, Bryan (Amanda) Webb, Decorah, IA, Christopher (special friend Laura) Martin, Preston, MN, Benjiman (Cassandra) Horsfall , Protivin, IA, Mason (Stephanie) Martin Decorah, IA, Sarah Stumme Rockwell City, IA, Mallory (Ryan) Askelson, Decorah, IA, Tarrah Ballard, La Crosse, WI, along with 24 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. The family would like to thank the Aase Haugen home staff for the compassionate care he received for the last year. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents: David and Francis Martin.
