Marvin Houdek, age 77, of Burr Oak, Iowa died on Friday, June 17, 2005 at the Winneshiek Medical Center, in Decorah, Iowa following a long illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 20, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Plymouth Rock, Iowa with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa and after 1:00 p.m. at the church on Monday afternoon. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Marvin Merle Houdek was born on May 9, 1928 the son of Charles and Rosella (Harms) Houdek in Calmar, Iowa. He moved with his family to Lime Springs and Burr Oak, where he attended school. Marv served two years with the US Navy and then he graduated from Canton High School in 1949. Marv married Ann Sheridan on May 28, 1951 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Lawler, IA. They lived in Decorah and Marv drove a beer truck for Darling Distributing for twenty-six years. In 1966, they bought a farm near Burr Oak. They ran the Crystal Inn in Burr Oak for twelve years, retiring in 1990. Marv enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing pool, but especially loved being with his family, children and grandchildren. Marv was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Plymouth Rock and the Knights of Columbus. Marv’s survivors include his wife, Ann Houdek, Burr Oak, IA. Five daughters: Mary Jane (Ron) Michels, Decorah, IA; Roselyn Houdek, Burr Oak, IA; Georgette (Jeff) Pierce, Cresco, IA; Colleen (Loren) Busch, Mabel, MN and Jacqueline (Darwin) Kupka, Decorah, IA. Two sons: John (Diane) Houdek, Decorah, IA and Michael (Loreen) Houdek, Burr Oak, IA. Fifteen grandchildren: Alex Michels, Jeremy (Emily) Pierce, Sarah and Dustin Pierce; Celine Houdek, Crystal, Chelcie and Cloey Busch; Justin and Jaimison Andrus; Thomas, Jennifer and Jordan Houdek; Joshua (Jennifer) Houdek and Caleb Houdek. Two great grandchildren: August Pierce and Conner Houdek. Three brothers: Dwayne (Diane) Houdek, Mabel, MN; Richard (Marilyn) Houdek, Rochester, MN and Merle (Carol) Houdek, Rochester, MN. One sister: Marion Johnson, Harmony, MN and many nieces and nephews. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother-in-law: Paul Johnson; one sister-in-law: Mary Houdek and one nephew: Randy Johnson.
