Marlys Emery

Marlys Emery, age 85, of Bluffton, Iowa, died on Monday, February 4, 2008, at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, Iowa, following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 8, 2008, at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, Iowa, with Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 1:00 p.m. at the church on Friday afternoon. Marlys Leone (Barth) Emery was born on April 22, 1922, the daughter of James and Alma G. (Olson) Barth on the family farm near Locust, Iowa. Marlys attended county school in Locust and Decorah Community Schools. She married Roger John Emery on May 22, 1939. She was a homemaker and a farmwife. She enjoyed visiting with people, gardening, cooking, drawing, playing cards and bingo and traveling and her dog, Dryfus. Marlys was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church and the Red Hat Ladies Society. Marlys’ survivors include her two daughters: Sharon Miears, Decorah, IA and Linda Weber, Bedford, WI. Four sons: Darrell Emery, Omaha, NE; Ronald (Darlene) Emery, Decorah, IA; Charles (Glenda) Emery, Burr Oak, IA and Dale Emery, Decorah, IA. Fourteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren. One Aunt: Alice Andreae, Elkader, IA and one uncle: Harold Erickson, Mabel, MN. Two brothers-in-law: Arland (Annette) Emery, Decorah, IA and Jessie (Phyllis) Emery, Mabel, MN. Four sisters-in-law: Delores Emery, Burr Oak, IA; Beverly Berg, Davenport, IA; Betty Juhl, Jacksonville, FL and Nell Ewing, Waterloo, IA. Marlys was preceded in death by her parents: James and Alma G. Barth. Her husband: Roger Emery in 1986. One son: Robert Emery in 1963. One daughter: Carol Jean in infancy, who was a twin to Darrell. One brother: Victor Barth. Two brothers-in-law: Merlin and Thomas Emery. Two sisters-in-law: Lenora Zellager and Joanne Emery.
