Marjorie L. Rekward

Marjorie L. Rekward, age 94, of Decorah, IA died Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, from complications of a stroke. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at First United Methodist Church in Decorah by Rev. Carol Kress with burial in Phelps Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 27 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, with a V.F.W. Auxiliary Memorial Service at 6:00 P.M., and on Wednesday one hour before the service at the church. Marjorie Lucille (Gjetley) Rekward was born February 22, 1915, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Marge attended rural school through 8th grade in Pleasant Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She married Sylvester A. Sorenson in 1933. They later divorced. This union was blessed with three sons: Arlin, Gary and Robert. Marge then was united in marriage with John L. Rekward on August 8, 1954 at First United Methodist Church in Decorah. They were blessed with one son, Allan. Marge worked for many years at Henning’s Cash Market in Decorah, then as a cook at the Decorah Middle School. She was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Decorah and was very active there, particularly with the Ruth Circle of United Methodist Women. She was a superb cook, collected recipes, volunteered at R.S.V.P., was an avid reader and enjoyed television. Marge was a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and member of the Rebekahs. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Ella (Gjetley) Fitzgerald; and two sons, Gary Sorenson on August 25, 1981 and Robert Allan Sorenson, in infancy. Marge is survived by her husband John, of Decorah; two sons: Arlin Sorenson and his wife Delores, of La Crescent, MN, and Allan Rekward and wife Becky, of Readstown, WI. Also, ten grandchildren: Kari Benesh, husband Jim, Cindy Ross, husband Fred, Ian Rekward, Thomas Rekward, Anna Rekward, Erika Rekward, Carmen Kriener, husband Dale, Rachel Sorenson, Kimberly Rubalcava, husband Bob, and Jan Hedrick, husband Richard. There are eleven great-grandchildren: Stefanie Benesh, Andrea Benesh, Cassandra Ross, Jared Ross, Abigail Ross, Kaitlyn Kriener, Brandon Kriener, Kaiti Rubalcava, Pablo Rubalcava, Nickales Hedrick, and Jordan Hedrick; along with her life-long friend, Lynette Ellefson of Mesa, AZ.
