Marie Sersland

Marie Sersland, age 103, of Decorah, IA, died Wednesday morning, June 29, 2016 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with Rev. Ron Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, July 1 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m., one hour before the service, at the church. Marie (Brown) Sersland was born on April 27, 1913 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Julius and Emma (Peck) Brown. She was baptized and confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. She attended Broghammer country school and graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1931. In her youth, Marie loved playing all sports, especially playing ball with her brothers. She was united in marriage to Harold Sersland on June 14, 1933 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. To this union two sons were born, Robert and Dean. Harold and Marie farmed and she helped with all of the chores. She was very active in Ladies Aid and Circle at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church and had a very strong faith. She was a very good cook and liked to entertain. Marie always liked to look her best, loved playing cards especially bridge and was very competitive in her games. She did knitting, sewing and embroidery. She loved horses and enjoyed bowling and fishing. Marie loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great- grandchildren and spending time with her whole family. She always wanted to know what was going on and being involved in their lives. Marie and Harold also spent 13 winters in Arizona. Marie became a resident of Aase Haugen Home on July 24, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harold on June 23, 1983; great-grandson Jay Sersland; great-granddaughter Gabrielle Gerleman; three brothers: Lloyd, Leonard, and Clarence Brown; and her sister Stella Erickson. Marie is survived by her two sons, Robert (Sadie) Sersland of Decorah and Dean (Judy) Sersland of DuBois, WY; six grandchildren: Keith (Peggy) Sersland of Decorah, Cheryl (Brent) Carlson of St. Olaf, IA, Bonnie (Bryon) Tapp of Austin, MN, Deanna (Jim) Lizarraga of Cedar Rapids, IA, Valerie (and special friend Matt) Sersland of Casper, WY and Dustin (Beki) Sersland of Sheridan, WY; nine great-grandchildren: Brad (Alisha) Carlson, Jamie (Christopher) Reimer, Tyler (Kimberly) Carlson, Robin Sersland, Shawn Sersland, Jimmy Lizarraga, Sammy Lizarraga, Hunter Sersland and Braeden Sersland; and by seven great great-grandchildren.
