Lyla Steele

Lyla Steele, age 86, of Decorah, IA, passed away Monday, June 24, 2024, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the First Lutheran Church - 604 W Broadway St. in Decorah with Rev. Michael Wilker presiding. Her burial will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Spring Grove, MN. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church Thursday morning. The Helms Funeral home is handling the arrangements. Lyla (Omodt) Steele was born on February 7, 1938, the daughter of Oliver and Mabel (Storlie) Omodt in Spring Grove, MN. Lyla attended Spring Grove Schools. Lyla was united in marriage to Walter Steele on June 8, 1957, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, MN. Together they enjoyed riding in parades all around the area in their 1982 Chrysler LeBaron convertible and going to McDonalds at 5:00 for supper during the week. They also enjoyed garage sales and antique shopping as well as going to the Depot Outlet. Lyla loved her pets, especially her dogs. Her home was always very well kept, and she enjoyed decorating for all the seasons and holidays. Lyla is survived by her brother: Milford Omodt. Nephews: Arden (Linda) Gjere, David (Pam) Gjere, and Daniel (Jodi) Gjere. Brothers-in-law: Curtis Steele and Eugene Deck. Friend: Rosie Ramsey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Steele. Parents: Oliver and Mabel (Storlie) Omodt. Parents-in-law: Raymond and Gertrude (Ramsey) Steele. Sister: Clarice (Jerome) Gjere. Brother: Harold Omodt. Brothers and Sisters-in-law: Robert Steele, Betty (Bernard) Brunotte, Shirley Steele, and Charlene Deck.
