Lawrence "Larry" Meyer

Lawrence David Meyer, 84, of Ossian, Iowa passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 11, 2022, following a lengthy battle with cancer. His funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 20th, at 11:00 a.m. at Springfield Lutheran Church, 1969 Middle Calmar Rd. Decorah, IA., with Pastor Daryl Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Springfield Cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19th, at Springfield Lutheran Church. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Larry, known to many as “Sugar Jets”, was born April 18, 1938, to Lawrence G and Ethel (Schutte) Meyer in Ossian, Ia. Larry was Baptized and Confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Iowa. He attended Ossian Public School, graduating in 1956. Upon graduation Larry enlisted in the US Navy, where he would serve four years, spending two of those years aboard the USS Hancock Aircraft Carrier. In 1958, while on military leave for his twin sister’s wedding, he met Lorraine Boe, who happened to be the sister of the groom. This meeting led to a correspondence and courtship via the US mail. Larry and Lorraine were united in marriage on June 18, 1960, at Springfield Lutheran Church. This past June, the couple celebrated 62 years of marriage. To this union they were blessed with five children. After serving in the Navy, Larry returned home to operate the family farm with his father. In 1982 Larry started his career as a well-respected truck driver for Wicks Construction. During his 27 years of employment at Wicks, he was known for his attention to detail and keeping his truck spotless. Larry enjoyed dancing at Matters Ballroom with his wife, socializing with his family and friends over a New Tower (Peppermint Schnapps and Water) and was always ready for a game of cards, especially 31, asking, “do you have time for one game.” He had a keen sense of humor, infectious laugh and smile. He was well known for his catchphrases “oh, Sugar Jets” and “Holy Chippin’ Hammers.” Larry could often be found going for cruise, working on puzzle books, watching TV game shows and spending time with his friends and family. Larry cherished his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was sure to greet them with a smile and often referred to them as “little buddy”, “honey-boy” or “sweetheart” and was sure to find them a treat to enjoy. Larry is survived by his loving wife Lorraine. Their three sons: Kevin (Sandra Steinlage), Kent, Kyle (Connie Luzum); two daughters: Karen (Larry) Berg and Kendra (Randal) Hemesath. As well as eight grandchildren: Matthew Meyer, Kelsey (Drew) Bowers, Michelle (Blake) Buddenberg, Mitchell (Mallory Weideman) Meyer, Devin Humpal, Erick Schroyer, Trev (Carley Vinkemeier) Schroyer. Two step-grandchildren: Jennifer (Andrew) Meagher and Travis (Elizabeth) Oates and 13 great-grandchildren. One brother: Mike (Janice) Meyer; two sisters: Mary Habreichter and LaRue Anfinson; and sister-in-law Elaine Meyer. Preceding Larry in death were his parents, Lawrence and Ethel Meyer; one brother, John Meyer; in-laws, Bennie and Myrtle Boe; brothers-in-law, Melvern Boe, Wayne Anfinson, Harold Haberichter; and infant grandson, Jared Meyer. We would like to thank all of our extended family and friends, as well as the nurses, doctors, and staff of Gundersen Lutheran Hospitals and Clinic, Ossian Ambulance, Winneshiek Medical Center, and the Winneshiek County Hospice team, that visited with him during his treatments, showing kindness and support.
