Kenneth Timmerman

Kenneth Timmerman, age 86, of Decorah, IA, died on Sunday, June 11, 2017, at the Barthell O.E.S Home in Decorah, IA. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 23, 2017, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago Street, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Dave Sorenson presiding. There will be no visitation prior to the funeral. Kenneth Vaughn Timmerman was born on July 3, 1930, the son of Arno and Delyla (Bollman) Timmerman in Castalia, IA. Ken attended grade school in Castalia and High School in Postville, graduating in 1948. Ken married Mary J. Schlee on December 31, 1950 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Together they had four children: Dawn, Kevin, Joel and Craig. Ken was a farmer all of his life until he retired in 1995 when he and Mary moved to Decorah. As a farmer, his greatest joy was driving down the corn rows in the fall and watching the hopper fill up with shelled corn. He served on the church council at St. Paul Lutheran, including council president. He served on the Big-Four fair board and was on the Postville School Board for fifteen years. Ken was elected to the Postville Pirate Hall of Fame in 2007 after being the “voice” of the Postville Pirates football team for 32 years, announcing all home football games. After retiring to Decorah, he worked with “Mitch” doing small repair or construction jobs that no one else wanted to do. Kenneth was a member of the Luren for 35 years and he loved to sing. He was a soloist for many weddings, funerals and Luren. Ken was a great gardener and was known for his “trademark” rows of Canna Lilies that he planted every year. Kenneth is survived by his wife of 66 years: Mary Timmerman. Four children: Dawn (Rob) Mena, Houston, TX; Kevin (Melanie)Timmerman, LaCrosse, WI; Joel (Deborah) Timmerman, Decorah, IA and Craig (Tina) Timmerman, Austin, TX. Six grandchildren: Palmer and Stefan Mena, Houston, TX; Anna (Braham Ketcham) Timmerman, Oak Park, ILL; Kerri (Aidan) Timmerman-Edwards, Atlanta, GA; Maura Timmerman, Berkeley, CA and Kelly Timmerman, LaCrosse, WI. Two great grandchildren: Cora and Elliot Ketcham. Brother-in-law: Dick (Norma) Schlee, Postville, IA. Sisters-in-law: Betty Timmerman, Marie (Bill) Schlee and Eunice (Jim) Schlee along with several nieces and nephews. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents: Arno and Delyla (Bollman) Timmerman. Two brothers: Cloy Timmerman and Wayne Timmerman. Nephew: Scott Timmerman. Father and mother-in-law: Ed (Mary) Schlee.
