Karen Ann Rosel, age 69, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Friday, September 19, 2008 at her home in Decorah of cancer. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, September, 23, 2008 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen. Friends may visit with the family one hour before the service at the church on the day of the service. Karen Ann Rosel was born March 28, 1939 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Nelfred and Ada (Sorenson) Oakland. Karen was a 1958 graduate of Pasadena High School, Pasadena, CA. She was a certified cosmetologist and bank teller. On May 4, 1958 Karen was united in marriage with George L. Rosel in Pasadena, CA. This union was blessed with three children: Tammy, James and Cindy. Karen was very musical and artistic and enjoyed playing the organ and harmonica. She also liked rosemalling, woodcarving, doing calligraphy and reading. When the children were little she was a Girl Scout leader and Sunday school teacher. She was a homemaker and spending time with her family was her greatest love. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelfred and Ada Sorenson. Karen is survived by her husband, George of Decorah, IA; two daughters: Tammy (Patrick) Slattery of Loveland, CO and Cindy Calderwood of Decorah, IA; one son, James M. (Holly) Rosel of Colorado Springs, CO; seven grandchildren: Amanda and Allison Rosel, Ashley Wangler, Wade, Tawny, and Trevor Slattery, Lindsey Calderwood; six great grandchildren: Madilynn Rosel, Paisley Wangler, Kadya and Tyler Slattery, Ariel and Carmella Doll; two brothers: Roger (Laurie) Oakland of Escondido, CA and Dwane (Janice) Oakland of Reno, NV; four nieces and nephews: Cathy and Dale Kruse of Decorah, IA, Danny Rosel of Decorah, IA, Julie and Dale Hogenson of Decorah, IA, Suzie and Brian Mahoney of Waukon, IA; one brother-in-law, Gene (Marcia) Rosel of Decorah, IA.
