Joseph Weis

Joseph A. Weis, age 83, of Decorah, IA, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on December 29, 2021, at Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home in Decorah. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2022, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Donald Hertges and Rev. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial will be in St. Benedict Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2022, at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, and on Monday beginning at 10:00 a.m., one hour before the service, at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Joseph “Joe” Alvin Weis was born on May 4, 1938, in Decorah, Iowa to Alvin and Pauline (Koester) Weis. He was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, IA. Joe graduated from St. Benedict School and then Decorah High School with the class of 1956. Following high school, he attended technical school for auto body in Austin, MN. He returned to the family business and later became a partner with his brothers Jim, Tom, and Tip Weis. Joe was united in marriage to Patricia “Patty” Hove on October 22, 1960. This union was blessed with three children, Marc, Julie, and Steven “Beaver”. Joe was a religious person of strong faith and a lifetime member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. He served on the church board for many years. He was a member of Silvercrest Golf and Country Club, Oneota Golf and Country Club, and the Elks Lodge. Joe loved playing golf with his family and friends and always had a witty joke to tell. He and his wife enjoyed travelling extensively after his retirement at age 59. Joe was a charter member of the Toppling and Goliath (Dixie’s) Mug Club where he liked to share a beer and storytelling with his friends. He led a full life. Joe entered Barthell Eastern Star Retirement Home in October of 2021. Joe is survived by his wife Patty, his 3 children and 5 grandchildren: Marc (Sandi) Weis of Andover, MN, Prescott (Caitlin) Weis of Anoka, MN, Alexandra “Lexi” (Brad) Berg of Minneapolis, MN; Julie (Mike) Lisowski of Chatfield, MN, Pamela Lisowski of Chatfield, MN; Steve (Nancy) Weis of Decorah, IA, Derek Weis of New Hope, MN, and Marissa Weis of Cedar Falls, IA; four siblings: Shirley “Peach” (Cyril) Murphy of Edina, MN, Jim (Caroline) Weis of Decorah, IA, Betty “Liz” (Gabe) Alvarado of Penn Valley, CA, and JoAnn (Tom) Martindale of Santa Cruz, CA; one sister-in-law, Lorraine Weis of Decorah, IA and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Pauline Weis, his brothers Tom, Dave and Richard “Tip” Weis, his sisters Sandra Weis and Sr. Jeanenne “Tub” Weis.
