John Magner

John Magner, age 89, of Cedar Rapids, IA (formerly of Decorah) died on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at his home in Cedar Rapids surrounded by his family. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at the St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding. Burial will be in the St. Bridget Cemetery in Bluffton. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2019 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah and also after 10:00 a.m. at the Church on Tuesday morning. Memorials may be made to the family John Victor Magner was born on February 16, 1930 the son of John and Elizabeth (Malone) Magner in Waukon, IA. He graduated from St. Pats in Waukon. John married Bernadette Courtney on May 26, 1953 at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Bluffton, IA. Together they had seven children. John worked for Luther College as a plumber for most of his life until retiring. He then took a job at Eastern Star Nursing Home which he loved. He enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions and dearly loved spending time with his family. He is survived by wife: Bernadette. Seven children: Judy of Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Dennis) Maulson of Waterloo, John T of Edina, MN, Jeff (Theresa) of Omaha, NE, Jerry (Sherie) of Cedar Rapids, Joe (Amy) of Cedar Rapids, and Jean (Tom) Vogel of Eagan, MN. Ten Grandchildren: Tanya (Jason) Sbiral, Tammy Maulson, Trisha (Jeff) Dean, Tess (Max) Kuenstling, Andy Magner, Courtney Magner, Michael Magner, Katie Magner, Sophia Vogel. Seven great grandchildren. Sister in law: Mary (Pat) Donovan and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Elizabeth (Malone) Magner. In-laws: Terrance and Mabel Courtney, Parnell Courtney, Bill and Ann McKenna, Paul, Iona and Mary Courtney, Peter and Ila Courtney.
