Janina Nowok, age 79 of Decorah, Iowa passed away on March 14, 2025, at home surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 307 W Main Street, Decorah, Iowa, with Rev Donald Hertges presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A rosary will begin at 10:00 a.m. and a brief visitation will follow until the time of service at the church on Tuesday.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janina Amalia Nowok (Kominek), who left us peacefully on March 14, 2025, at the age of 79 after bravely battling cancer for three years. Born on July 10, 1945, in Wodzislaw Sl. (Upper Silesia) Poland, Janina lived a life rich in love, resilience, and dedication.
Janina was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Jan Wincenty Nowok, and a cherished mother to her two daughters, Aleksandra Nowok-Tallier and Joanna Swiers married to Aaron Swiers. She was also a proud and loving grandmother to Anna Tallier, William Tallier, Alina Tallier, Maya Swiers, and Amanda Swiers, who brought her immense joy and pride.
Janina will be remembered by all her friends and family in Poland and Germany. She leaves behind her sister Halina Mirkiewicz-Fila, brother Heniek Kominek, and Albertha Schmid, who was a daughter from another mother.
A woman of deep faith, Janina was a devoted Catholic, drawing strength and comfort from her beliefs throughout her life. Her spirituality was a guiding light, and her kindness and compassion touched everyone she met.
An accomplished scholar, Janina earned her master’s degree in pharmacy from the prestigious Jagiellonian University in Krakow. After obtaining her degree, she worked as a director of a Pharmacy store for most of her life in Poland. Her passion for learning and dedication to her field were evident in all she did. In 1983, Janina and her family courageously moved to the United States in search of new opportunities and a better life. Janina continued to work diligently in the service industry, always embodying grace, kindness, and an unwavering work ethic.
Janina and Jan eventually settled in Decorah, Iowa, where she will be laid to rest at the Saint Benedict Cemetery. Services will be held at the St. Benedict Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
Janina will be remembered for her warmth, enduring strength, and the deep love she had for her family and faith. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and devotion that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
