Irene Schissel

Irene Schissel, age 97, of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 11, 2007, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa, after a long illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 14, 2007 at the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, by Rev. Phillip Gibbs. Burial will be in the church cemetery Friends may call after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday morning. Irene Elizabeth (Einck) Schissel was born on June 24, 1910, the daughter of Benjamin and Julia (Doerr) Einck in Castalia, Iowa. Irene graduated from Postville High School in 1928. Irene married John W. Schissel, Sr. on June 2, 1930 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa. Irene taught country school for one year. John and Irene farmed in Winneshiek County, retired and moved into Decorah in 1976. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards and crocheting, and making afghans for all the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Irene especially loved her family. Irene was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and the Willing Workers of Madison Township. Irene’s survivors include her two daughters: Ardith (Leonard) Triska, Decorah, IA and Kathleen (Eldon) Vine, Clear Lake, IA. One brother: Jerome (Norma) Einck, Decorah, IA. Nine grandchildren: Randy & Cindy Schissel, Ruth & Tom Boding, Julie Einck, Terry Wiltgen, Pat & Jay Courtney, Sandy & Kris Fadness, Dianne & Darren Young, Ann Hoefer, Kyle & Tish Vine. Twenty-two great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Irene was preceded in death by her parents. Her husband: John W. Schissel on May 6, 1979. One son: John W. Schissel, Jr. in 1963. One grandson: James Vine in 1978. One sister: Amanda (Henry) Schultz. Two brothers: Arthur (Mildred) Einck and Fredrick (Irene) Einck.
