Harold Aschim, age 86, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, following a short illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2008, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday and on Monday morning from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa. There will be a scripture service at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon. Harold Gerhard Aschim was born on July 15, 1921, the son of Hans and Marie (Nelson) Aschim on the family farm near Decorah, Iowa, where he presently lived. Harold attended country school near the farm. He worked on the family farm with his father and then worked and lived in Ohio for one and a half years. Harold married Ann Wilson on April 4, 1945 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Harold farmed and worked for Interstate Power Company in Decorah as a janitor for twenty-one years, retiring on May 1, 1986. Harold was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Silvercrest Golf Course. He enjoyed playing cards and pinochle and was an avid Hawkeye fan. He loved and enjoyed his family, grandchildren and especially his great granddaughter. Harold’s survivors include his wife, Ann Aschim, Decorah, IA. One son: Mark (Jan) Aschim, Rockford, IL. Four grandchildren: Katie (Neal) Evans, Lindsay (Kirk) Davies, Natalie Aschim and Lee Aschim. One great granddaughter: Ayla Davies. Three sisters: Palma Zidlicky, Lucy (Lyle) Sacquitne, and Aggie Winger, all of Decorah, IA. One brother: Karl (Sylvia) Aschim, Decorah, IA. One sister-in-law: Irene Aschim, Decorah, IA and several nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents: Hans and Marie Aschim. Two sisters: Anna Olson and Thelma Dresselhaus. Three brothers: Albert, Henry and Lester Aschim.
