Gordon Anderson

Gordon Anderson, age 84, of Decorah, died at home on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 5, 2012, at the Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. David Sorenson and Rev. Bryan Robertson presiding. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012 in the Fellowship Room at the Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago Street, Decorah, IA. Gordon Parnell Anderson was born on March 14, 1928, the son of Gilbert and Luella (Jaastad) Anderson, west of Decorah, IA. Gordon was baptized and confirmed at the Decorah Lutheran Church. He attended Madison County School #8 and farmed with his family. Gordon served in the Korean Conflict and returned to the area and worked for the Railroad for a few years. He married Marian (Thayer) Neste on February 28, 1964, at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Gordon farmed west of Decorah for many years, along with milking cows, raising beef cattle and hogs. Gordon was known as the neighbor who could “fix anything”. He enjoyed doing welding, woodworking, carpentry, plumbing and fixing anything mechanical. Gordon was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends. It was Gordon’s wish to die in the same home he was born in and was thankful for his family to be able to take care of him at his home. Gordon is survived by his wife: Marian Anderson, Decorah, IA. One son: Paul (Beth) Anderson, Decorah, IA. One daughter: Becky Anderson, Decorah, IA. One step-son: Alan Neste, Decorah, IA. Four grandchildren: Meghan (Scott) Wiedow, Cory Anderson, Bryan Anderson and Anna Anderson. Two great grandchildren: Hayden and Devin Wiedow. Two sisters: Beverly (Carsten) Steen, Waterloo, IA, and Frances (Emil) Frana, Decorah, IA. Sisters and brothers-in-law: Robert Grindland, Seattle, WA; Anita Anderson, Cedar Rapids, IA; Helen (Ken) Miller, West Union, IA; Dale (Nora) Thayer, Decorah, IA; Ron Thayer, New Jersey; MaeAnne (Don) Potter, Elma, IA; Jeanette (Marvin) Schafer, St. Charles, MN; and Chris Thayer, Sarasota, FL, along with many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents: Gilbert and Luella (Jaastad) Anderson. Six sisters: Irene (Gary) Groth; Loretta (Marcelline) Phillips; Clara (Leon) Williams; Pauline (Ken) Keune; Almeda Grindland; and Katherine (Eldon) Holten. Two brothers: Herman (Lois) Anderson and Donald Anderson. His mother-in-law: Elizabeth Thayer. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Marcella (Delmar) Brooks, William “Bill” (Joyce) Thayer; Robert Thayer; Lorraine (Ken) Lawver and Ralph Thayer.
