Gertrude Charlotte Johnson

Gertrude (Gert) C. Johnson, age 100, of Decorah, Iowa, died Friday, November 23, 2007 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a long illness. Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday, November 29, 2007 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen with burial in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa. Friends may call beginning at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, one hour before services at First Lutheran Church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is handling the arrangements. Gertrude (Gert) Charlotte Johnson the daughter of Benjamin and Emma (Goeke) Ludeking was born April 28, 1907 in Ludlow Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. The family moved to Waukon in 1916. After graduating from Waukon High School in 1927, Gertrude worked at Hale's department store in Waukon. She married Earl A. (Hi) Johnson on November 22, 1932 in Galena, Illinois. They moved to Decorah and joined First Lutheran Church where Gertrude was a member of WELCA. She worked at Anthony's department store in Decorah for 23 years. In 1989 she sold her home of 47 years on Mill Street and moved to an apartment. She had been a resident at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah since March 1999. Survivors include two sons, Donald (Elaine) Johnson of Akron, Ohio and Thomas (Linda) Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Eric (Pam) Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska, Kristi (Kevin) Carpenter of Avon Lake, Ohio, Beth (Mark) Gerberich of Akron, Ohio, Karl (Beth) Johnson of Columbus, Ohio, Karen (Keith) Wedinger of Columbus, Ohio, Vicki Reuter of Cedar Falls, Krista Johnson of Cedar Falls, Brian and Jami Johnson of Des Moines; nineteen great-grandchildren; Alexandria, Daniel, and Taylor Johnson; Stephanie, Jared, and Brent Carpenter; Matthew, Thomas, and Joel Gerberich, Brian, Kelly and Erin Johnson, Brenda and Kimberly Wedinger, Kelsey Reuter, Christian Johnson, and Kole, Logan, and Morgan Johnson. Also surviving are four nieces. Gert was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl (Hi) Johnson on November 12, 1975, a son Gary B. Johnson on August 21, 2001, an infant daughter Charlotte who died at birth, and one sister Althea Jackson of Ames, Iowa.
