George Tupy, age 86, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Wellington Place in Decorah, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 201 Oak Street, in Fort Atkinson, IA, with Rev. Tyler Raymond presiding. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson, IA, with military honors.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at St. John's Catholic Church, Fort Atkinson, IA 52144. Rosary will begin at 8:45 a.m.
George was born April 14, 1940, to William and Viola (Huber) Tupy at the family farm. He attended a Country School through the 8th grade. George served in the US Army from May 1963 to May 1965. He was with Company A, 4th Battalion 3 D Regiment. After basic training, he was stationed in Germany. When arriving home, he worked for the Fort Atkinson Coop and farmers until he was hired by Oliver in Charles City. George then went to work for Winn. Co. Road Dept. in District 2 as a foreman until he retired.
On October 17, 1986, George married Shirley West. The love of his life. Music was a big part of their life, George on the guitar and Shirley on the concertina. He gave the band the name Shirley and her Concertina." A simple life is all they wanted. They spent most of their days in the outdoors enjoying the land, nature, wildlife, and working on rebuilding old engines and tractors. George was a member of the Huber Steffes American Legion Post #672
George also had a love for machinery auctions, Steam Engine shows, and family and friends. If we all learned one thing from George, it would be to take time and enjoy the beautiful outdoors and keep life simple.
George is survived by his wife, Shirley; nieces and nephews: Norma (Jim) Coolidge, Eau Claire, WI; Patty (Ron) Krivachek, Fort Atkinson, IA; Judy (Joe) Kuisle, Rochester, MN, Donna (Bruce) Meyer, Goodhue, MN; Bob (Joan) Tupy, Calmar, IA, Sharon (Dave) Hackman, Fort Atkinson, IA; Larry (Donna Quam) Engen, Decorah, IA; Dale Engen, Ridgeway, IA; Mary (Ron) Tedow, Shelbyville, IN and Gregg (Lisa) Engen, Decorah, IA; one sister in-law Sharon (West) Larson, Elgin, IA; nieces in-law Sherry Stuart, Elgin IA; Tammi (Chris) Clarke, Springville, IA, Tara (John) Breon, Boone, IA; Shelley Harbaugh, Bernard, IA; Sabrina Hangartner, Postville, IA; Sonya Anderson, Waukon, IA.
George was preceded in death by his parents William and Viola (Huber) Tupy; Brothers: Donald, Alvin and Linus Tupy. Sister: Doris (Tupy) Engen, Sister in-law Rose Tupy, Brother in-law Gordan Engen. Nephews: James Tupy, Gary Tupy and Tom Engen. Mother and father in law; Earl and Gladys (Gregerson) West; Brother in-laws, Lyle, Garry and Earl Gene West; Nephew in law: Kevin West.
