Gary Keune

Gary Keune, age 73, of Marion, IA passed away on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA with Rev. Nick Radloff presiding. Burial will be in St. Luke’s Catholic Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Monday, May 31, 2021 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA and also after 10:00 a.m. at the Church on Tuesday morning. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is handling arrangements. Gary Kenneth Keune was born on June 4, 1947 the son of Kenneth and Ruth Pauline (Anderson) Keune. He graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1965. After high school, he moved to Cedar Rapids and began working for Cedarapids, Inc. He was drafted by the United States Army in 1966 and served as a Medic for eighteen months. He returned home and continued his work with Cedarapids, Inc. On May 29, 1971, Gary was united in marriage to Susan Kuennen at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas. They later made their home in Marion, IA, where they became members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Together they had four children: Chad, Chalise, Adam and Andrew. Gary started Sugarland Rentals in Marion and later opened a second location in Branson, MO. He loved spending time at the cabin, in Frederika, which his extended family helped build. He loved boating, skiing, and late night rides on the pontoon. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, snowmobiling, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Gary loved his family and spent time cooking and baking with his grandchildren as well as attending their various activities, including their annual trip to Adventureland. Gary belonged to the American Legion Post 0298 in Marion, IA. Gary is survived by his wife: Susan Keune of Marion. Children: Chad (Leslie) Keune, Coralville, IA; Chalise Keune, Marion, IA; Adam Keune, Iowa City, IA and Andrew Keune, Marion, IA. Grandchildren: Ella Keune, Jackson, Maegan, Abigail and Emersen Reininga; Audriana Keune. Siblings: Mike (Bonnie) Keune, Little Turkey, IA; Alan (Holly) Keune, Little Rock, AR, Kenneth “Buck” (Susan) Keune, Decorah, IA and Penny (Jamie) Johnson, Sumner, IA. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Jean Kuennen of Rochester, MN; Karen (Don) Guidice of Chugwater, WY, Clarice (Harvey) Timp of Calmar, IA, Sandy (Joe) Timp of Castalia, IA, Cindy (Norm) Einck of West Union, IA, Randy (Jackie) Kuennen of Ft. Atkinson, IA, Lisa (Al) Brockmeyer of Calmar, IA, Dale Kuennen of Calmar, IA, Jackie (Lance) Brandt of West Des Moines, IA, Loren (JoAnn) Kuennen of Ossian, IA, Mark (Linda) Kuennen of Ft. Atkinson, IA and Jeff (Kristin) Kuennen of Marion, IA. Adopted Grandpa: Paul Huggins. He was preceded in death by his parents: Kenneth and Ruth Pauline (Anderson) Keune. Nephew: Mark Keune.
