Evelyn Julia Stephens

Evelyn J. Stephens, age 81, of Waukon, IA and formerly of Decorah, IA, died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a long illness. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, June 11, 2006 at Decorah Lutheran Church by Rev. Allen Vik with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Friends may call after 1:00 P.M. Sunday at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of the arrangements. Evelyn Julia Stephens was born July 16, 1924 on a farm in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Melvin and Josephine (Buer) Stephens. She was baptized on August 13, 1924 and confirmed on June 5, 1938 at Decorah Lutheran Church. She graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1940. Following school, Evelyn entered the Cadet Nurse Corps, receiving her training at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis. Evelyn was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church and belonged to the church circle, Ladies Aid and the Carry On Club. She loved music, and liked playing the piano and singing. Evelyn also enjoyed researching her family genealogy. She had a great sense of humor and was a cheerful soul. Her smile will be missed. Evelyn became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon on May 30, 2002. Survivors include two sisters, Marcella Norgard of Cedar Rapids, IA and Vernell Haugen of Eugene, OR; six nieces and three nephews, Marilyn (Albert) Anderson, Donna (Daryl) Bergan, Elaine (Emory) Fretheim, Mary Jo (Stanley) Finholt, Diane (David) Borness, all of Decorah, Ted (Marlene) Bey of Cedar Rapids, IA, David (Judy) Bey of Kernersville, NC, Eric (Susan) Haugen of Ocoee, FL and Dr. Julie Haugen (Thomas Brase) of Eugene, OR; and many great nieces and great nephews. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Esther Miller.
