Obituary

Eugene Hageman, age 94, of Decorah, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Barthell O.E.S Home in Decorah, Iowa.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at St. Benedict Church, 307 W. Main St, Decorah, with Father Donald Hertges presiding. Burial will follow at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery in Ossian, IA.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church.

Eugene Arthur Hageman was born on January 23, 1931, to August and Theresa (Schmitt)Hageman on the family farm south of Calmar, IA. The seventh of ten children. Baptized at Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina, IA. He attended St. Aloysius Catholic School in Calmar, IA. Eugene, growing up, had many fond memories of farming and hunting with his 6 brothers. They spent time trapping gophers, fox, and skunks and selling their pelts for money. Eugene and his brothers enjoyed playing ball on the farm or catching a ride into town to play on a real baseball diamond.

Eugene married Patricia Walz on April 30, 1957 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Monona, IA. They were blessed with 4 children. Sandra, Larry, Dean, and Alan. They farmed and raised their children near Ossian, IA. At the height of his farming career, Eugene farmed over 1000 acres with his wife and sons. Eugene enjoyed to travel, he had been to every state and twice to Europe. His favorite place to travel was Alaska and the drive to and from there.

Eugene is survived by his 4 children: Sandra Hageman, Las Vegas NV; Larry (Jerilyn) Hageman, Decorah, IA; Dean (Rose) Hageman Clinton, MS and Alan (Ruth)Hageman Decorah, IA. 8 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren. One brother Robert (Joann) Hageman. Sister in laws Joyce Hageman, Shirley Hageman, Doris Walz and Donna Mae Miller. One brother-in-law Robert (Ann) Walz. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Eugene was preceded in death by his wife Patricia in 1998. Grandchildren Cory Hageman and Allison Clough. His parents August and Theresa. His brothers and sisters Leonard (Frances), Francis (Anna), Marie (Clarence)Brincks, Helen (Francis) Dietzenbach, Louis (Dolores), Delbert, August and an infant brother Cornelius. Brothers in law Arthur Walz and Roger Miller.

The family would like to thank the staff at Barthell Eastern Star/ Arlin Falck for the wonderful loving care he received over the last few years.
