Ethel Luzum

Ethel Luzum, age 91, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 6, 2013, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 304 South Maryville, Calmar, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 202 South Washington St., Calmar, IA. There will be a prayer service at 3:00 p.m., and a rosary at 4:00 p.m., on Friday. Friends may also call after 12:30 at the church on Saturday afternoon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Winneshiek County Memorial Hospice, 901 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA 52101. Ethel Katherine (Huinker) Luzum was born on September 24, 1921, the daughter of Frank and Caroline (Einck) Huinker on the family farm near Festina, Iowa. Ethel attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina. She was united in marriage to Leonard Luzum on June 23, 1942, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. Together they farmed west of Calmar for many years, where Ethel took care of the chickens. Ethel enjoyed playing cards, visiting, quilting, baking kolaches and making homemade noodles. Ethel was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Ethel is survived by her daughter: Marilyn Klimesh, Cedar Rapids, IA. Two sons: Dick (Diane) Luzum, Calmar, IA, and Larry (Kathy) Luzum, Cedar Rapids, IA. Seven grandchildren: Dan (Barb) Klimesh, Alan (Kristin) Klimesh, Michelle (Paul Martez) Klimesh, Brian (Jennessa) Luzum, Jackie Luzum, Kelly (LaTash) Luzum, and Jodie Luzum. Thirteen great grandchildren: Brianna, Kayla, Tanner, Gabe, Piper, Brandi, Zach, Cael, Ellie, Lauren, Maysun, Mykala and Isaiah. One sister: Geneva (Clarence) Kuennen, St. Lucas, IA. One brother: Donald (Catherine) Huinker, Ossian, IA. Two sisters-in-law:; Arlene Huinker, Calmar, IA and Bernice Huinker, Ft. Atkinson, IA, along with several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents: Frank and Caroline Huinker. Her husband: Leonard Luzum on February 28, 2001. One son: Daryl Luzum on Nov. 19, 2005. One son-in-law: James Klimesh in 2009. Four brothers: Cornelius, Robert, Gerald and Virgil Huinker. Two sisters: Margie Huber and Bernice Buchheit.
