Edward Gehling

Edward Gehling, age 95, of Decorah, IA passed away Monday, March 3, 2025, at Evans Memorial Home Cresco, IA.

A private family service will be held at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah, IA. With Rev. Donald Hertges presiding. Burial will be in the St. Aloysius Church cemetery.

Edward Roman Gehling, the son of Roman and Anna (Bakula) was born on April 25, 1929. He was the eldest of four children. Their family farmed north of Calmar. Edward attended St. Aloysius Catholic School and Calmar High School graduating in 1947.

On November 27, 1954, he married Florence Short. Together they had 7 children. Edward and Florence made their home on a farm they bought Northeast of Calmar where they raised their family and farmed for most of their lives. They later divorced in 1994.

Edward was a member of St. Benedicts parish, Silver Springs Country Club. He enjoyed spending time with family, socializing, dancing, golfing, and playing cards.

Edward is survived by his seven children: Christine (Gerald) Moellers, Cresco; Nancy (Arnold) Markin, Decorah; Kathy (Terry) Kuennen, Fort Atkinson; Julie (David) Hemesath, Fort Atkinson; Jennifer (Bill) Hageman, Ossian; Nick (Linda) Gehling, Decorah; Dave (Lucy) Gehling, Decorah. Grandchildren: Sarah (Scott) Kach; Jessica Meyer (Mike Heidt); Jolene (Josh) Langreck; Jennifer (John) Fish; Chad (Renee) Schissel; Travis (Alissa) Schissel; Lee (Jill) Schissel; Joshua (Kim) Kuennen; Kristi (Landon) Holthaus; Chelsea (Brady) Severson; Matthew (Dawn) Hemesath; Michael (Stacey) Hemesath; Nathan (Lauren) Hemesath; Jackie (Regan) Becker; Mitch (Danielle) Hageman; Tanner (Allison) Gehling; Alyssa (Kyle) Mracek; Kurtis, Samantha and Rachael Gehling.  Great-grandchildren: Claire, James and Cora Kach, Taylor Meyer, Abigail, and Victoria Heidt,  Hayden Langreck, Charlotte and Colton Fish,  Laylah and Vienna Schissel, Keeran Barr, Riley, Jade and Wyatt Kuennen, Braylon, Kynslee, Emersyn and Grayson Holthaus, Lennon, Shay, Rory and Blair Severson, Alessandra and Austin Hemesath, Elizabeth and Kaleb Hemesath, Lucas and Eleanor Hemesath, Claire, Charlie and Luke Becker, Clayton, Levi and Nora Hageman, Brock and Brody Gehling, Layla Gehling, Blakely Mracek. Two step-great-grandchildren: Alex and Elena Heidt. One brother: Lawrence Gehling. Sister-in-law: Ginny. Several nieces and one nephew.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents: Roman and Anna Gehling. Brother: Florian. Sister: Helen and sister-in-law Lavonne Gehling.
