Duane Shanks

Duane Shanks, age 60, of Decorah, IA, died on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at his home. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Henrytown Lutheran Church, rural Canton, MN, with Rev. Paul Thompson presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be visitation from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. Duane Garland Shanks was born on November 28, 1952, the son of Royce and June (Dohrmann) Shanks in Zumbrota, MN. Duane graduated from Mabel-Canton High School and attended Winona Tech for one year. He served in the US Army from 1972-74. Duane was united in marriage to Denise Frana on January 14, 1978, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah. Duane worked for thirty-seven years at Cam Car (Infastech) in Decorah, retiring last November for health reasons. Over the years, Duane enjoyed golfing and had two holes-in-one on #4 and #8 at Silvercrest. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and hunting trips with his brothers and the Brynsaas boys. He always enjoyed visiting and having a beer with all his friends, but above all he enjoyed his family and grandchildren. Duane’s survivors include his wife: Denise Shanks, Decorah, IA. Two children: Jeremiah (Stacy) Shanks, Ridgeway, IA, and Melissa Shanks, Decorah, IA. Two grandchildren: Nicole Panos and Tristan Shanks. Two brothers: Mike (Cindy) Shanks, Canton, MN, and Daniel (Margo) Shanks, Canton, MN. One sister-in-law: Lynell Shanks, Harmony, MN. Duane’s father and mother-in-law: Dennis and Darlene Frana, Decorah, IA. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Daryl (Sue) Frana, Decorah, IA; Doreen (Jeff) Roney, Decorah, IA; Donette (Bill) Trisler, Tulsa, OK; Douglas Frana, Kendallville, IA; Dean (Maria) Frana, Decorah, IA; Dawn (Bob) Hawkins, Caledonia, MN; along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Duane was preceded in death by his parents: Royce Shanks, December 25, 1996 and June Shanks, May 22, 2013. His brother: Steven Shanks on Oct. 27, 2010.
