Dorothy Bohach, 93, went to her eternal rest on July 22, 2026 surrounded by family at the “The Highlands” in Decorah.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville, Iowa, with Rev. Tyler Raymond presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Thursday morning. Rosary will begin at 8:30 a.m. before the visitation.

Dorothy Joan (Hackman) Bohach was born October 13, 1932 to Joe and Theresa (Schmitt) Hackman. Dorothy attended St. Luke’s Catholic School in St. Lucas through 8th grade. Being the youngest of eight children (six consecutive older brothers), Dorothy helped her mother on the family farm with cooking, gardening, and cleaning to support her family’s busy life. One fond memory Dorothy shared was that of staying with her sister, Margaret, and carrying baby Elaine into the house in February of 1950. While staying with her sister, Dorothy was visited by a young man (Billy Bohach) who came to wish her a Happy Valentine’s Day. Two years later, on May 20, 1952 Dorothy was married to William (Bill) Bohach at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (one of her “happiest memories”). They made their home on the family farm west of Fort Atkinson and were lifetime members of St. Wenceslaus Parish in Spillville. 

Dorothy was a wonderful mother to three children: Marlene, Mark, and Mary. She was known for “two-meat” meals, delicious desserts, cookies, and chocolates in her pantry. She was not afraid of hard work and enjoyed working outside–especially lawn mowing. If Dorothy didn’t answer the phone in the summer, she was probably outside on her John Deere. She recently commented that one of her most satisfying feelings was looking at the farmyard when she finished mowing and string trimming–it looked so good! 

Dorothy found joy in spending time with her grandchildren; they recalled playing old games, watching VCR Disney movies, and receiving ziplock bags of “treats,” when they went outside “exploring” on the farmyard. Most recently, she enjoyed visits by her great- grandchildren and looking at their pictures on her bulletin board. She loved sharing stories with anyone who would take the time to socialize. If you were acquainted with any “Hackmans,” she would tell you who they were related to in the family and explain family lineage in great detail. She kept scrapbooks of newspaper articles that documented area happenings over several decades. 

Finally, our parting words have been shared countless times, “Love you, Grandma.” “Love you more.” “Love you the same,” and “Everything will be OK, Grandma.” Yes, Grandma Dorothy, it will be OK; you are at home now in the loving arms of Jesus and many members of your family. 

Dorothy is survived by her children, Mark (Barb) Bohach of Fort Atkinson, IA and Mary (Kenny) Fagan of Ankeny, IA.; Five grandchildren: Adam (Flannery) Bohach, Emily (Andrew) Chamberlain, Garrett (Kennidee) Bohach, Rhiannon Barth, and Jacob Fagan; Four great-grandchildren: Linden Will Bohach, Neely May Bohach, Elowynn Rose Bohach, and Opal Anne Bohach. Sister-in-law: Agnes Hackman and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Bohach; her daughters, Marlene and Marian (infancy); her parents Joe and Theresa (Schmitt) Hackman; her sister, Margaret Wenthold; her brothers, Leo, Anselm, Alfonse, Florian, Joseph, and Jerome Hackman; as well as many sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and other cherished family members. 

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at “The Highlands” and “Aase” for all the years of caring support she received.
