Donald Buhr, age 85 of Cresco, IA, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2025, at his farm in Cresco, IA.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Helms Funeral Home, 306 E Water St., Decorah, IA with Pastor Randy Kittelson presiding. Burial will be in Saint Peter Lutheran Cemetery, 28884 State St., West Union, IA 52175.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service on Friday at Helms Funeral Home.
Donald Ray Buhr, age 85 of rural Cresco, IA passed away on his farm on April 27th, 2025. Donald was born November 29th, 1939, the son of Marie and Harry Buhr in Sumner, IA
Don was baptized and confirmed in the St. John's Lutheran Church in Sumner, IA. He graduated from Sumner High School. Don served honorably and faithfully within the Army. When returning to Decorah he was employed at KDEC and KNEI radio stations.
He was involved in the Tristate Pigeon Club in Decorah, IA for 10 to 15 years. This was a passion he enjoyed sharing with Joan. Don and Joan were married on May 10th, 1970. Shortly there after they purchased a farm in Howard County. Don farmed and raised Registered Black Angus Cattle. He also had a passion for gardening and growing small fruits and taking produce to the Farmers Markets. He enjoyed fishing in the Volga and Turkey Rivers with his wife and stepchildren. Don had a passion for sharing his knowledge of making wine and apple cider.
He is survived by his sister Anne (Dave) Oakland, Niece, Lynn (Kevin) Helgerson, Stepchildren, Deb (John) Rima, Jane Mckernan, Steve (Mary) Smith, Rick (Judy) Smith, Jan (Jim) Henkes, Donna (Tim) Fontana, Terry Smith, and Russ Smith. Survivors also include 24 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and 1 great nephew, 1 great-great nephew, 1 great niece.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, parents, Marie (Wesley) Sorge and Father, Harry Buhr, Nephew, Chad Oakland, Stepson, Dan Smith and one grandson, Anthony Smith
