Don Floy

Donald Fredrick Floy passed away peacefully March 30, 2013 from complications of pneumonia surrounded by his wife and family at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago Street, Decorah, IA, with Rev. David Sorenson and Rev. Bryan Robertson presiding. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday morning. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of arrangements. Don was born on October 8, 1936 the son of Fred and Mae Viola (Johnson) Floy in Clear Lake, Iowa. Don attended country school until fourth grade, the family then moved to Ventura, then to Clear Lake and back to Ventura, graduating from Ventura High School in 1954. Don served in the US Army from December 1955 to 1966, serving three years in Germany. It was in Germany that Don met his wife, Irene Herm, who he was married to on October 31, 1957 in Karlsruhe, Germany. After finishing his tour at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, they moved to Carpenter and Don worked at the grain elevator for three years. He also worked at Schrock Brothers Fertilizer in Carpenter from 1963-66. The family then moved to Fairfield, Iowa where he worked as a Walnut Grove Feed Salesman for one year. In July 1967, he went to work at Thermogas in Fairfield and later transferred to Decorah in 1977. In 1993, Don retired early only to go back to work at Mracek Electric for the last nineteen years. Don enjoyed doing woodworking in his spare time. Don was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, the Men’s Fellowship Group and the VFW. Don is survived by his wife: Irene Floy, Decorah, IA. Two sons: Michael Floy & wife Marcia, Decorah, IA and David Floy & wife Amy, Princeton, MN. One daughter: Deanna Stoube & husband Mark, Davenport, IA. Nine grandchildren: Kristopher Floy (fiancée Val Nissen), Amanda Floy, Ashley Olsen (Aaron) , Daniel Floy, Donald K. Floy, and Dustin, Sean Stoube (fiancée Jessica Kludy), Dara Stoube, Seth Stoube Floy Three step-grandchildren: Austin Maples, Caitlin Maples, and Sierra Maples. Three Great-grandchildren: Keara Floy, Brayden Floy and Talon Olsen. Two sisters: Gloria Martin & husband Harold, Rockwell, IA; Pueggell & husband Harold, Garner, IA. One Sister-In-Law Ellen Herm, Velbert, Germany and several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents: Fred and Mae Viola Floy. One brother: Marvin Floy. Four sisters: Florine Martin, Ferne Darnell, Edna Juveland and Delores Thimmesh. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be directed toward Decorah Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice
