Don H. Broughton

Don Broughton, age 65, of Battle Mountain, NV, formerly of West Union, IA, died on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Cottage Grove Place Nursing Home, Cedar Rapids, IA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 19, 2010, at the Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union, Iowa, with Rev. Galen Smith presiding. Burial will be in the Wadena Cemetery, Wadena, IA. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m., on Thursday morning at the church. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Calmar, Iowa is in charge of arrangements. Don was born on May 8, 1945, the son of M.W. “Bill” and Virginia Marie (Madson) Broughton in Oelwein, Iowa. Don attended North Fayette High School, graduating in 1963. He served in the US Air Force for four years, particularly enjoying stations in Montana and Alaska. He married Georgia Horrick on October 11, 1969, in Davenport, Iowa, and they moved to Battle Mountain, Nevada shortly thereafter. Don worked as a Radar Technician for the FAA, and enjoyed life on his ranch in the Humboldt River Basin. After retiring with 35 years of service, Don operated a trucking business until his health forced him to return to Iowa. Don enjoyed his animals, and loved to hunt, fish, and golf. Don’s survivors include: his three children--Boyd (Joni) Broughton, Marion, IA; Renee (Matt) Bush, Lander, WY; and Brett (Heather) Broughton, Rowley, IA; his nine grandchildren--Amanda & Matthew Broughton; William, Samuel & Jacob Bush; Carly, Allison, Madelyn & Josie Broughton; two brothers--Charles W. (Charlotte) Broughton, Calmar, IA, and David M. Broughton, Battle Mountain, NV. Don is also survived by his three brothers-in-law: Edward (Barbara) Horrick, Willitts, CA; Robert (Jackie) Horrick, Irvine, CA; and Bill (Kimberly) Horrick, Holiday, FL, along with several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, M.W. “Bill” (Oct. 31, 1999) and Virginia Broughton (Jan. 21, 2003), and his wife, Georgia Broughton (Sept. 13, 1998).
