The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Faith Home Assisted Living and Faith Lutheran Home for their dedicated care of Darlene in her final years.

Darlene was born on Aug. 14, 1935, to Albert and Clara (Hauer) Bulgren near Waucoma, Iowa. After graduating from St. Lucas High School, she trained to be a medical lab technician at St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton.

Darlene met Clarence “Slim” Schwamman at a dance, and the two were united in marriage on May 25, 1957, at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas. The couple had four children: Michael, James, Gail, and Patrick.

While Clarence served in the United States Air Force for 25 years, Darlene’s service to our country was that of a military spouse. With each relocation to Waverly, Sioux Lookout, Grand Forks, Sergeant Bluff, Colorado Springs, and Omaha, Darlene held down the fort, making a comfortable home for the family, nurturing their young children, managing the household, and finding community. Their military experience also included several long-distance stints, with Clarence remotely assigned and Darlene and the kids at home.

After military retirement, the family built a house down the street from Darlene’s childhood home in St. Lucas, and she cared for her elderly father in his last years. Darlene worked for many years as a medical lab technician at the New Hampton Clinic.

Although scattered across the country, Darlene’s kids and grandkids cherish the 45 years of memories returning for the family gatherings she hosted in St. Lucas for holidays and other special occasions.

After several years caring for Clarence until his passing in 2016, Darlene and her beloved dog, Ginger, started a new chapter in Waverly, where she enjoyed going on outings with neighbors and being closer to family. She spent her final years near family in Osage.

Darlene deeply valued faith, family, and frugality and quietly modeled them through example. Expressions of her love often took tangible (and sometimes tasty) form: molasses cookies at Christmas, homemade clothing for her kids, coconut cream pies for special occasions, volunteer hours at church and in the community, blankets for her grandkids, knit hats for NICU babies — not to mention what probably amounted to thousands of roast beef and ham ball dinners through the years.

Darlene was someone who remembered both the little and big things that mattered to those she cared about — from birthdays to anniversaries, favorites to fears, and hardships to hopes. She offered steadfast support, somehow knowing what was needed in the moment, whether it be words of wisdom, a listening ear, actions, presence, prayers, or all of the above.

She was a member of the St. Luke Rosary Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the National Catholic Society of Foresters.

Darlene is survived by her four children, Michael (Pia) Schwamman of Wichita, Kansas; Jim (Rita) Schwamman of Hilton Head, South Carolina; Gail (Tim) Bradford of Dripping Springs, Texas; and Patrick (Barb) Schwamman of Osage, Iowa. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Thomas Schwamman (Barry Blair), Maria (John) Charbonneaux, Laura Schwamman (Mark Clevenger), Steven (Corbin) Schwamman Hayes, Greg (Kelly) Schwamman, Adam (Bre) Bradford, Abby Bradford (Murugesan Vydeswaran Dushyanthram), Brian Bradford (Sarah Heuschele), Lucas Schwamman, and Libby (Braxton) Betancur; 14 great-grandchildren; her brother, Roger (Kathy) Bulgren; and her sisters, Janice Anderson and Lois Dietzenbach.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Clarence Schwamman; her parents, Albert and Clara Bulgren; her daughter-in-law, Patricia Schwamman; and her brothers-in-law, Paul Dodge, Leon Dietzenbach, and Warren Anderson.
