Curtis Lien, age 82, of Decorah, died Friday, September 4, 2009, at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa, after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at the Springfield Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Norman Bauer presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be military rites at the cemetery by the Brockman – Hammersland American Legion Post #503, Ossian, IA. Friends may call from 4:00-7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2009, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 12:00 Noon at the church on Tuesday morning. Memorials may be given in memory of Curtis to the Aase Haugen Nursing Home, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, IA 52101. Curtis Duane Lien was born on March 30, 1927, on the family farm in Springfield Township, rural Decorah, Iowa, the son of Gullick and Anna (Droserud) Lien. He was baptized April 24, 1927, and confirmed June 21, 1940, at Springfield Lutheran Church. Curtis attended the Lee country school, rural Decorah and then later on Iowa State College. After school, Curtis joined the United States Army, where he was stationed in Guam. Curtis married Wilma Ohnstad on March 8, 1952, at Goodhue Lutheran Church, Florence, South Dakota, and to this union five children were born. Curtis and Wilma farmed the family farm outside of Nordness, until retiring to Decorah in 1987. Curtis was a lifelong member of Springfield Lutheran Church. Curtis is survived by his wife: Wilma Lien, Decorah, IA. One daughter: Kristi (Rich) Brandt of Souix Falls, SD. Three sons: Randy Lien, Ames, IA.; Kelly (Sandra) Lien, Castalia, IA.; and Rick (Melissa) Lien, Plymouth, WI. Nine grandchildren: Matt Brandt, Megan Hentges, Tim Lien, Joey Lien, Christian Lien, Trygve Lien, Alex Lien, Anna-Britt Lien and Samantha Lien. One brother: Alden (Helen) Lien, LaCrosse, WI. Six sisters-in- law: Maxine Ohnstad, Watertown, SD; Helen Miller, Watertown, SD; Gladys Bates, Sioux Falls, SD; Clarice Weishaar, Canby, OR; Grace Torresdal, Decorah, IA and Harriet (Alton) Hillesland, Sydney, MT. One brother-in-law: Lester (Mavis) Ohnstad, Florence, SD, along with numerous niece and nephews. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents: Gullick and Anna (Droserud) Lien. One son. One sister-in-law: Stella (Leiv) Valberg. Five brothers-in-law: Robert Miller, Carroll Ohnstad, Don Bates, Rueben Weishaar and Lester Torresdal.
