Craig Queel

Craig Queel, age 91, of Decorah, IA, died on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 15, 2012, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue in Decorah, IA, with Rev. Allen Vik presiding. Burial will be in the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, Decorah, IA. Friends may call from 2:00- 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue in Decorah. There will be a VFW Memorial Service at 4:00 p.m., on Sunday at the funeral home. Craig Junior Queel was born on June 2, 1921, the son of Martin and Sadie (Bronner) Queel in Cresco, IA. Craig graduated from Cresco High School in 1938. He entered the US Navy in March 1941, and served during World War II. Craig married Corinne Kohl, from Decorah on March 30, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA, and to this union, they had one daughter: Cindy. Craig then continued in the Navy, serving as Chief Warrant Officer, retiring in 1970. Craig and his family lived in Orlando, Florida for five years, before moving to Decorah after the death of his first wife in 1975. Craig was an avid sharp shooter and enjoyed shooting in tournaments; where he received many medals and ribbons over the years for his excellent marksmanship. Craig married Iverna “Gary” Moen, on March 17, 1990 in Carpentersville, IL. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards. Craig was a member of the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977. Craig is survived by his daughter: Cindy Jirak and husband Jeff, of Lawler, IA. Three grandchildren: Craig, Martin “Marty” and Debbie Jirak. One sister-in-law: Colletta Vick, Decorah, IA. Three nieces: LuAnn McKenzie, Nancy Vick and Marilyn Bonjean. Craig was preceded in death by his parents: Martin and Sadie (Bronner) Queel. His first wife: Corinne (Kohl) Queel in 1975 and his second wife: Iverna “Gary” (Moen) Queel in 2004. One brother-in-law: Marvin Vick in 2008.
